The infrastructure work on the railway is never ending.
Stopping the spread of Wilding Pine root systems that want to lift the track is a constant problem. We have just spent $$$thousands on drone spraying to front foot future problems.
But the past pines are a menace.
Here we see the work of one of our talented machine operators/volunteers Dan.
He has ripped out the root system affecting the track.
The massive pines still stand though.
Anyone need some old man pine?
It needs to be felled cut up and removed from the rail corridor within one week if you are keen.
Rail access only!!
We can help with that bit!!

A big day for the volunteers today at the railway! 🤙

The curve at “Antills” has been sleepered gauged and ballasted and a “quick” 2 hour reshuffle of the Depot and Station yards. 🚂

Ballast wagons are squeezed in between Steam Incorporated carriages and Pounamu Tourism Group ADL units for re-loading. 🪏

She’s a full house at the moment but great to help out these other operators. 🤝

Of course the myth the legend De 512 from Diesel Traction Group doing the MAHI for Matariki Weekend. 😎

Come for a ride next Sunday 19 July! Trains depart Glenmark station, Waipara at 11:30 and 2pm. 🚉

Mid-Winter train rides - JULY & AUGUST ❄️

Our next operating day will be the third Sunday of July, Sunday 19th! This will be the last weekend of the winter school holidays, so why not spend it with the family and take the kids out for a 2 hour scenic train ride through some of North Canterbury’s beautiful scenery, before they head back to school! 🚂

Good news too, with the country’s diesel and petrol prices looking to “settle” back down again, we will be RETURNING to ‘twice monthly’ operations on the first & third Sunday’s of the month from August onwards. 👏

📆 So our operating calendar through the remainder of winter will be as below:

- Sunday 19th July 2026
- Sunday 2nd August 2026
- Sunday 16th August 2026

🎟️ Adult: $38
🎟️ Child: $18
🎟️ Family of 4: $98

As usual, trains depart Glenmark station, Waipara at 11:30am & 2:00pm, please turn up at least 20 minutes before departure time to check your tickets in! 🙂

Working together with other heritage groups 🤝

With our friends at Steam Incorporated now based semi-permanently in the South Island, we have reached an agreement to store their fleet used on the Marlborough Flyer train on site over the winter months. On Thursday 18th June, their recently restored blue DC locomotive headed north to Blenheim and dropped off Da 1431 & steel carriage Aa 1757 which were both at Ferrymead for a visit. Yesterday on Sunday 21st June, Dg 770 ran our passenger trains in wet weather conditions, featuring one of Steam Incorporated's wooden Aa carriages in the consist to boost passenger capacity. In the afternoon, their DC returned south to Christchurch and dropped off the rest of the heritage carriages on site. ✅

It's amazing what can be achieved when heritage groups work together to keep rail travel alive, especially in the current absence of no rail capable ferry across Cook Strait. We hope to utilize the Steam Inc gear on our railway while living on site going forward, stay tuned to any future updates here on our page! 🚂
