Before you can climb The Wild Thing, someone has to build it.
Mark’s been spending plenty of time on the cliff lately — drilling, bolting, hauling ropes and putting together what will become our newest adventure.

The Wild Thing is getting closer! We're flying up the remaining cable and wood for the trail today. I can't wait to climb it next week! Who else can't wait??

Wildwire is in Marie Claire.
Somewhere between the fashion and the beauty pages there's a waterfall in Wānaka and a paragraph about climbing up the side of it. Still can't quite believe that's us.

Meet Mark.
He is the one who took the idea of Wildwire and turned it into reality.

Before Wildwire, Mark spent his youth as a rock climber and worked as an international mountain guide and industrial abseiler. He has lead expeditions all over the world including Canada, South America and the Himalayas and summited Mt Aspiring 20 times.

It was Mark and a small crew of qualified friends who built the thing you climb. You climb it one rung at a time and this is literally how it was built. Every rung, cable and bridge on this waterfall went in by hand. And he's still at it.

From building the original climb and setting up the canyon, to travelling through Europe for inspiration, He is still building The Wild Thing (new this summer!), and you will see him up there putting in handrails, clearing predators and generally getting covered in mud — Mark is happiest when he's making something happen in the mountains.

So when we tell you you're safe up there, that's where it comes from. Years of experience, knowing the waterfall, and knowing exactly what it takes to build and maintain a climb like this.

He's also Laurel's husband, which means Wildwire gets discussed over dinner more than anyone would probably like. 😂

One last section to go! Mark is heading up to finish drilling the final section of rungs on The Wild Thing climb. Once he's got this in, we can finally start climbing it ourselves.

The team will then get their first chance to have a go and get everyone ready for the summer season. 🤞💪🪜

Its getting very real now! The Wild Thing opens December 2026.
