🐊 Exercise Pukpuk 2026 🇦🇺🇵🇬 delivered four major projects at Igam Barracks:
1️⃣ Extended base boundary fence road and constructed drainage and culverts
2️⃣ Fully renovated Wewak Coy barracks accommodating 100 soldiers for the Papua New Guinea Joint Forces Academy
3️⃣ Complete Igam Barracks Soldiers' Mess renovation, including brand-new kitchen equipment
4️⃣ Major improvements to the JFA Forward Operating Base facility, giving trainees an improved learning experience.

Today, on Battle for 🇦🇺 Australia Day, we remember the Australians who served and sacrificed in the defence of our nation during the Second World War.

From Darwin and Kokoda to Milne Bay and across the Pacific, we honour their courage, service and sacrifice.

Lest we forget.

On the first Wednesday of September, we observe Battle for Australia Day. This day commemorates the battles fought against Japanese forces in the South and Southwest Pacific during World War II, including the bombing of Darwin, the Kokoda campaign, and the Battle of Milne Bay, to prevent an invasion of mainland Australia.

Of the more than 39,000 Australians who lost their lives in WWII, around 17,000 were killed in the Pacific theatre of war. Battle for Australia Day serves as a reminder to honour those who defended our nation and contributed to the defeat of Japan.

A delegation from Lae City Authority and Lae City Tourism Bureau has been in North Queensland the last week visiting Sister City Cairns Regional Council 🇦🇺🇵🇬

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen joined Tradelinked Cairns-PNG-Pacific to meet with a tourism delegation from Cairns sister city Lae in Papua New Guinea who were in Cairns for the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The Lae City Tourism Bureau discussed their vision to create a better environment for tourism and business in their city and the opportunity for mountain biking. The Lae School of Nursing, part of Papua New Guinea University of Technology, for many years has been a core part of 🇦🇺 Australia's education partnership in Lae 🇵🇬

Recently, the Australian Ambassador for Gender Equality Hon Michelle O'Byrne visited the school with Consul-General Kanowski to talk with students and staff. The Australian Government supports many of the students through in-country Australia Awards scholarships -- support that enables students to focus on their studies and taking the pressure off families.

Australia is a close partner of Lae's University of Technology and the School, and we thank Principal Bomareo and her team for their ongoing work delivering the next generation of nurses for Papua New Guinea 👏
