Artistic Carving from Lae to be installed at the Cairns Botanical Gardens

We are proud to announce that four Master Carvers from Morobe and Sepik have begun a historic residency under the Lae-Cairns Sister City arrangement.

For the next 50 days at the Morobe Agricultural Showgrounds, Lae tourism Bureau Stall these artisans will transform massive Kwila logs into four magnificent carved totem poles.

These masterpieces are destined for a permanent exhibition at the Cairns Botanical Gardens, standing as a proud symbol of Lae and Papua New Guinea.

This project marks the start of an exciting botanical gardens partnership. While our totems poles find a home in Australia, a dedicated "Lae Garden" will be established in Cairns, and conversely, a "Cairns Garden" will be created right here in the Lae Botanical Gardens.

The Lae and Cairns sister Cities First initiated in 1984 and reignited in 2018 under the leadership of Hon. John Rosso, Member for Lae, this partnership goes beyond art.

It is a commitment to strengthening our ties in business, tourism, and education while celebrating the cultural and geographical bonds that make us true neighbors.

Empowering the Next Generation: Lae City Tourism Bureau Judges 2026 Busu Secondary School Exhibition

From April 30th to May 1st, 2026, the Busu Secondary School Exhibition transformed into a vibrant two-day celebration of student creativity, cultural heritage, and academic innovation. This year, the event took on a prestigious dimension as the Lae City Authority (LCA) Tourism Bureau returned to serve as the official judging panel.

The 2026 exhibition was marked by a unique collaboration. Representing the LCA Tourism Bureau were five final-year Communication for Development Studies students (Mr. Daniel Parak Ms. Anita Rupa Ms. Sparddea Eric Konnie Mr. Gabriel Kasir
and Ms. Grace Gongafrom) the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech)

Currently completing their internships with the LCA, these students stepped into the role of judges, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical tourism application. As ambassadors for the Bureau, they brought a fresh, professional perspective to the evaluation process while embodying the future of the industry.
At Busu Secondary School, tourism is viewed as far more than a classroom subject. It is treated as a vital connection to the community and a pathway to professional pride.

The exhibition highlighted how student projects can: Encouraging students to see their cultural traditions as a treasure worth sharing. Opening doors to hospitality, communication, and urban development. Strengthening ties between learners and the local artisans who drive Laeโ€™s creative economy.

The presence of the Unitech interns gave the exhibition a profound sense of partnership. By engaging directly with the younger students, the judges demonstrated how education and tourism work hand-in-hand to prepare the next generation of leaders.
Their role was not only to judge but to inspire, showing how student projects connect to the Lae City tourism vision and contribute to the communityโ€™s future."

The 2026 Busu Secondary School Exhibition was more than a simple talent showcase; it was a powerful reminder that tourism is rooted in people, stories, and connections. By empowering young voices to tell their own stories, the event ensured that these students see themselves as essential architects of Lae Cityโ€™s future.
