Trees may continue removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere long after their annual growth has ended, according to a new study.

Researchers found that mature oak trees keep performing photosynthesis and absorbing carbon even when they are no longer producing new wood. The discovery challenges the long-held assumption that carbon uptake and tree growth occur simultaneously.

Instead, trees may store or use the captured carbon in other ways, suggesting forests could continue locking away carbon more effectively than previously believed.

These findings may improve climate models and help scientists better estimate how forests will respond to rising temperatures and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide in the future.

**Plant Spotlight: Don Manuel**

๐Ÿ๐ŸŒป

Small in size, mighty in purpose! ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒผ Bees help pollinate flowers, support ecosystems, and contribute to much of the food we enjoy. Protecting these tiny workers means protecting natureโ€™s futureโ€”one bloom at a time.

๐ŸŒฟ

Researchers from the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) have identified important thermal and combustion characteristics of Philippine giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper), providing valuable data for its use as a renewable biomass fuel. Their study compared raw and carbonized bamboo to understand how each behaves during heating and combustion. The research found that raw bamboo ignites and decomposes more readily, making it suitable for processes requiring rapid energy release, while carbonized bamboo is more heat-resistant, ignites at higher temperatures, and burns in a more controlled manner, making it a promising material for charcoal-based fuel systems. The findings were published in the international journal Advances in Bamboo Science, a Q1-ranked scientific journal.

The study also established key kinetic parameters that describe how bamboo breaks down during combustion. These data can help engineers improve the design and efficiency of biomass energy systems, including technologies such as bamboo pellets, charcoal briquettes, and bioenergy facilities. Understanding these properties allows researchers to determine which form of bamboo is best suited for different energy applications, supporting efforts to develop cleaner and more efficient renewable fuels.

Bamboo is considered one of the Philippines' most promising renewable resources because it grows rapidly, regenerates naturally after harvesting, and is widely available. Previous DOST-FPRDI studies have shown that bamboo pellets possess high energy density and can be used as a supplementary fuel in biomass industries, household cooking, and even co-firing with coal, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions while decreasing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Researchers emphasize that scientific studies like these provide the foundation for developing locally sourced, sustainable energy solutions. As the country seeks to strengthen its renewable energy sector, improving the understanding of indigenous biomass resources such as bamboo could contribute to cleaner energy production, rural livelihood opportunities, and greater long-term energy security.

๐Ÿฆ‹

๐Ÿž๐ŸŒฟ
