BANIG: A Weaving Tradition from Aklan
📍 Province of Aklan

In the municipality of Nabas, bariw weaving is more than just a craft—it’s a way of life. Known as the primary source of bariw products in Aklan, this community has long transformed leaves of the bariw tree (Pandanus) into beautifully handcrafted items such as banig (mats), hats, bags, placemats, and baskets.

Each piece reflects the patience, skill, and creativity of local artisans—woven not just from leaves, but from heritage passed down through generations.

With the Pandanus (Bariw) Leaves Slitter Presser from DOST-MIRDC, artisans in Nabas can now process bariw leaves faster and more efficiently—allowing them to create more high-quality products while easing manual labor.

DOST-MIRDC recognized at the 2025 DOST Intellectual Property Awards

DOST-MIRDC researchers were honored today at the Quest Plus Conference Center Manila, Muntinlupa City, for their innovations and remarkable contributions to science and technology.

This year, DOST-MIRDC was recognized with a Utility Model for a motorized reed plant flattening machine and 3 International Publication Awards for studies on computer vision, failure analysis, and additive manufacturing.

The annual DOST Intellectual Property Awards celebrates the exceptional work of DOST researchers in their respective fields.
