COPERNICUS'S BOOK AND THE PHILIPPINES

May 20, 2026 -- It is not well-known in Poland that the oldest academic institution in the Philippines, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, houses copies of the very rare 1543 first edition of Nicolaus Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres).

Since the time of Ptolemy, the philosophical and religious belief was that it was the sun that revolves around the earth. The Polish scholar Copernicus was the first to systematically use mathematical reasoning over daily sensory experiences to establish that it is the earth and other planets that revolve around the sun.

While taken for granted today, this heliocentric model of the universe essentially lit the spark of the scientific revolution in the Renaissance period. Later discoveries by Kepler and Galileo relied on the concepts of the Copernican system, which led to modern astronomy and physics.

In 2023, UST and the University of Nicolaus Copernicus collaborated in restoring a copy of the original book, on the 550th birth anniversary of this world-famous Polish scholar.

Copernicus was not only an astronomer, but was also a cleric, economist, and physician. He was born in Torun, where his house is now a museum. https://muzeum.torun.pl/dom-mikolaja-kopernika/

Ambassador Alan L. Deniega met with Dr. Andrzej Tretyn, Rector of the University of Nicolaus Copernicus (Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu) at the International Asian Congress in Torun.

Philippine Embassy joins the 13th International Asian Congress

May 21, 2026 -- The Philippine Embassy participated in the International Asian Congress in the historic city of Torun, to discuss in-depth with other diplomats, Polish government officials, and members of the Polish academe this year's theme of "Shaping an Uncertain Future: Geopolitical Connections in a Changing World."

This gathering is a unique interdisciplinary dialogue in Central Europe. For 20 years, it has served as a platform focusing on the role of Asia in the contemporary international system, and its impact on global political, economic, and social processes.

Ambassador Alan L. Deniega delivered remarks, focusing not only on the excellent bilateral relations between the Philippines and Poland, but also on historic links with the city of Torun, where the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus grew up.

The guest country of honor this year is Uzbekistan, which presented cultural performances and Uzbek cuisine during the diplomatic banquet.
