Exploring Nguni Foodways at Luju Festival

Nguni foodways are more than recipes; they're a living archive of knowledge, passed from grandmother to mother to child. Today, visitors got a taste of that legacy learning how staple ingredients were traditionally sourced, prepared, and shared communally, and understanding the deep connection between food, family, and identity in Swati culture.

From grains to fermentation techniques to communal cooking practices, every method tells a story of resourcefulness, community, and respect for the land.

Exploring Nguni foodways isn't just about looking back it's about recognizing how these traditions continue to nourish us today. Thank you to everyone who joined us in tasting, learning, and preserving this piece of our heritage.

From the clay pots and wooden utensils used in daily food preparation, to the traditional techniques passed down through generations. The Eswatini National Trust Commission’s exhibition offers a rare and immersive window into the rich cultural heritage of our forebears and proudly presents a captivating exhibition at this year's Luju Festival.
Visitors are invited to witness a live demonstration showcasing these traditional items in active use, offering deeper insight into the practices that sustained Nguni households for centuries.
This is also a gentle reminder that food is more than just something to fill our stomachs it carries a uniting force, bringing families and communities together, preserving memory, and nurturing a shared sense of identity across generations.

Today, we join the world in commemorating World Ranger Day under the theme, “Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet.”
Rangers are the frontline defenders of our natural heritage. They protect wildlife and critical habitats, prevent illegal activities, manage fires, support visitors, and work closely with surrounding communities. They also collect vital scientific and ecological data on wildlife, vegetation, threats, and changing environmental conditions. This information supports research, monitoring, and informed conservation decisions.

We honour and appreciate their courage, commitment, and selfless service, often carried out under challenging and dangerous conditions. We also pause to remember the rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

To all our rangers: thank you for safeguarding nature and building the knowledge needed to protect it for present and future generations. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your service continues to inspire us.

Every heritage journey begins with a community that believes in its own story.

Today marked an exciting milestone as our team visited the Mambane community under the Matsenjeni North Inkhundla Cultural Heritage-Based Sustainable Tourism Project, proudly funded by the European Union through the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO.

The enthusiasm and warm reception from the Mambane community were truly inspiring. Community members demonstrated a clear understanding that their cultural heritage is more than a legacy of the past it is a valuable resource that can create sustainable livelihoods, strengthen local identity, and unlock new opportunities through heritage-based tourism.

This shared vision is exactly what the project seeks to nurture: empowering communities to protect, celebrate, and benefit from their unique cultural heritage while ensuring that future generations remain connected to their roots.

The journey has only just begun. Our next step is to work alongside the community to map the rich cultural heritage sites in and around Mambane, laying the foundation for a sustainable, community-led tourism initiative that is rooted in authenticity.

When communities embrace their heritage, they don't just preserve the past they create opportunities for the future.

The Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) and the Institute of Development Management (IDM) today marked a significant milestone with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the ENTC Boardroom, laying the foundation for a strategic partnership that will advance sustainable development, conservation, education, and innovation in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The MoU signing ceremony was officiated by ENTC's Chief Finance Officer and Acting CEO, Mr. Mduduzi Ndzinisa, who welcomed the IDM delegation and underscored the importance of the partnership in strengthening institutional capacity and driving sustainable national development.
The collaboration will focus on institutional capacity development, corporate training, collaborative research and innovation, curriculum development, resource sharing, youth empowerment through internships and experiential learning, environmental education and public awareness, as well as advancing eco-tourism and MICE development.

Through this partnership, ENTC and IDM reaffirm their shared commitment to building resilient institutions, empowering future leaders, promoting environmental stewardship, and positioning Eswatini as a regional leader in sustainable tourism, conservation, and knowledge exchange.
