Strengthening South–South Collaboration for Heritage Resilience

Dr Rohit Jigyasu, Programme Director of SEAMEO SPAFA, joined the 9th ICOMOS Brazil Scientific Symposium and General Assembly 2026 in Belém, Pará, from 25–30 August as an invited keynote speaker.

In his keynote, “Heritage as a Living System: Rethinking Conservation through Risk, Resilience and Adaptation,” he highlighted the need to view heritage as a dynamic relationship between people, nature and culture. Drawing on examples from the Amazon, Southeast Asia and beyond, he emphasised the importance of integrating traditional and scientific knowledge, anticipating risks and managing change through place-based approaches.

The symposium strengthened dialogue between Southeast Asia and Latin America, highlighting opportunities for South–South knowledge exchange and collaborative responses to climate change, disasters and the resilience of living heritage.

SEAMEO SPAFA remains committed to building stronger partnerships across the Global South for a more resilient shared heritage future.

Wrapping up an inspiring final day of the 41st SEAMEO SPAFA Governing Board Meeting in Sriracha, Chonburi, Thailand! 🇹🇭✨

On Day 2, commenced with a visit to the Phra Chudhadhuj Ratchasthan Palace, located on a historic Island, Sichang. Governing Board Members and participants explored the rich heritage and architectural legacy of the royal maritime residence, underscoring our shared commitment to regional cultural conservation.

In the afternoon, the meeting resumed with the review and adoption of the meeting proceedings, successfully concluding two fruitful days of strategic dialogue, collaboration, and planning for Southeast Asia’s archaeology, fine arts and cultural heritage.

A heartfelt thank you to all Governing Board Members, and participants for their invaluable contributions towards strengthening cultural cooperation across the region.

WHV 2026: River × Heritage II International Summer School, Ayutthaya

The WHV 2026: River × Heritage II International Summer School, Ayutthaya, taking place from 20-30 August 2026, brings together young participants to explore the connections between water, heritage, climate resilience, and Ayutthaya’s historic urban landscape.

On 21 August 2026, the programme opened with the Opening Session and classroom activities, featuring valuable contributions from the SEAMEO SPAFA team:

💧 “Ayutthaya’s Hydrology and Heritage: Managing Water Systems in Historic Cities” presented by Dr. Hatthaya Siriphatthanakun, Centre Director, SEAMEO SPAFA.

🌏 “Climate Change, Disaster Risks, and Resilience of Heritage Sites and Communities” presented by Dr. Rohit Jigyasu, Programme Director, SEAMEO SPAFA.

The sessions enhanced participants’ understanding of Ayutthaya’s World Heritage Outstanding Universal Value, associated values, and attributes, the relationships between water systems, cultural heritage, climate change, disaster risks, and building resilience for heritage sites and communities in the context of this historic city.

SEAMEO SPAFA is pleased to collaborate in this initiative by supporting scholarships for participants from Southeast Asia, expanding access to international heritage education and encouraging the participation of emerging heritage practitioners, students, researchers, and young professionals across the region. As a regional organisation dedicated to archaeology, cultural heritage, and the arts, SEAMEO SPAFA supports the safeguarding of World Heritage in Southeast Asia through capacity building, knowledge exchange, and regional cooperation, with a particular focus on empowering the next generation of heritage stewards.

Eligibility: Youth and Adults residing in Asia (East, Southeast, South, and Central)

Submission: until August 31, 2026 (until 18:00 KST)

Categories
-Drawing (Elementary, Middle/High School, Adult): Paper medium up to $210 \times 297\text{ mm}$ with Korean or English text.
- Essay Speech (Middle/High School only): 3–5 minute MP4 video in English (1080p Full HD or higher).
- Photo Essay (Elementary, Middle/High School, Adult): Up to 3 photos (JPG/JPEG, 3–10 MB) paired with a poem, reflection, or critical essay up to 4,200 characters.

Prizes & Recognition
- Grand Prize (7 winners): KRW 300,000 each
- Excellence Award (14 winners): KRW 200,000 each
- Merit Award (21 winners): KRW 100,000 each
All awardees will receive an official certificate issued by the Mayor of Gyeongju.
