Ajo Wildlife Habitat Community

Ajo Wildlife Habitat Community Ajo, Arizona provides habitat for wildlife throughout the community and is a certified National Wild Sparrow

"We have recently formed a new committee to oversee and preserve the distinction that Ajo holds as a Certified Wildlife Habitat Community. This distinction sets us apart and gives us the unique ability to promote one of Ajo’s most amazing attractions, our beautiful desert and its “wild” inhabitants. It is the perfect platform for educating visitors and newcomers on xeriscape landscaping, water con

servation, choosing desert adapted trees and creating sanctuary spaces for the myriad of critters we share space with."

We're two-thirds of the way to meeting the goal of the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge! All you need to do is certify your garden with the National Wildlife Federation to and spread the message that we can all help bees, butterflies and other pollinators right at home. If you haven't certified yet, now's the time. Details here: http://blog.nwf.org/…/habitats-help-reach-a-million-pollin…/

Here is an update on the waterboxx project. As you can see, the little trees are going strong. We did have to start over with the chaste tree because the wick was not working properly but it's doing great now. No human intervention on the desert willow.

If your considering registering your yard or school as a certified wildlife habitat, this amazing plant is a good choice. "For creosote, its slow and steady wins the race. They are a backbone of North American desert ecosystems. Their structure offers shelter, their seeds offer food, and their flowers support myriad pollinators. Creosote is one shrub worthy of our respect and admiration."

Apart from the cacti, the real rockstar of my Sonoran experience was the creosote bush ( Larrea tridentata ). Despite having been quite familiar with creosote as an ingredient, I admit to complete ignorance of the plant from which it originates. Having no familiarity with the Sonoran Desert ecosyste

The Ajo Wildlife Habitat committee introduced the "Waterboxx" tree planting project at the Shindig on Saturday. The waterboxx is an atmospheric water harvesting device designed for reforestation projects in very arid environments. Nearly 300 of these were donated to Ajo last year and we are gearing up for a tree planting project in the fall. We installed our first test sight at Frankie Adams house on Sunday. Anyone interested in this project let us know.
