Today we’re celebrating a very special milestone: Christine’s 15 years of service to NAMI New York State!

For 15 years, Christine has brought her dedication, knowledge, and heart to our mission and to the individuals and families we serve across New York. Her contributions run incredibly deep—from helping shape and strengthen our programs to her many years of work with our Helpline, providing information, support, and connection to countless individuals and families when they needed it most.

We are incredibly grateful for everything Christine has given to NAMI NYS and the NAMI family over the years. Please join us in congratulating her on 15 remarkable years—and in saying a very well-deserved thank you! 💚

Today, New York State highlighted state-funded efforts that are underway to ensure rural communities have access to high-quality physical and mental health care, in addition to addiction supports. In recognition of National Rural Health Day. NAMI NYS Thanks New York State Office of Mental Health, Governor Kathy Hochul, county officials, and state legislators who made this investment possible.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that $21 million in capital and start-up funding was awarded to establish three new Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Programs and improve four others across the state. This investment is critical for those experiencing mental health crisis as CPEPs serve as hospital-based emergency facility providing 24/7 crisis intervention, medical evaluations, and stabilization for individuals experiencing acute mental health or behavioral crises. We thank Governor Hochul and the Legislators who worked to make this funding available.

Last year, Senior Research Associate Richard Van Dorn, PhD, co-authored a multisite evaluation of Assisted Outpatient Treatment programs that examined clinical and social outcomes.

The study found improvements in treatment adherence, life satisfaction, mental health, and therapeutic relationships, along with reductions in violent behavior, psychiatric inpatient episodes, and arrests.

The findings are shaping national conversations and have been cited by CNN and other media outlets.

NAMI New York State continues to believe AOT is one tool within a broader continuum of mental health services. We seek to expand access to community-based care, reduce harm, keep people with serious mental illness out of the justice system whenever possible, and support families navigating these crises. This requires balancing individual rights and civil liberties while recognizing that some people with severe mental illness, including those experiencing clinical anosognosia, may not have the capacity to make informed treatment decisions.
