Albany School of Humanities Principal Marie Culihan announced Thursday that she has accepted a new position in a neighboring school district and will be leaving ASH at the end of this month.

"Leaving ASH is not an easy decision," she said. "In fact, it has been one of the hardest professional decisions I have ever had to make because this place – your students, your families and everyone in this incredible community – has become such an important part of who I am. But I leave with such tremendous confidence in ASH because of the exceptional and deeply committed faculty and staff members who will continue to serve you."

Principal Culihan's last day at ASH will be Aug. 31. Kenneth Lein, Ed.D., who you may remember from his time at ASH last school year, will step in as interim principal, effective Sept. 1, while the district begins a search for your next permanent principal.

On Thursday, we celebrated our amazing fifth-grade students at Albany School of Humanities (ASH) as they prepare for a new adventure: middle school!

Principal Marie Culihan, along with dedicated teachers and staff who have supported our students, shared encouraging words for our 70 rising sixth-graders. Students also had the joy of listening to a heartfelt message from Albany High’s Class of 2026 valedictorian, Julia Rosi, who attended ASH during her elementary school years.

Reaching this milestone is just one of many important steps for the Class of 2033, and we wish this group of talented students the very best as they continue their studies.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our students thus far on their academic journey. We know the foundation built during their years at ASH will set them up for a successful future, and we can't wait to see our "red dragons" soar to new heights in the years to come!

Our building just completed a Cultural Culinary Curriculum with a goal of encouraging students to explore diverse cultures through food. As part of the project, students were invited to sample North African cuisine - rice, chicken and vegetables - thanks to an Albany County Improvement Initiative Grant.

Red, white, and blue filled our performing arts center on Friday!

The ceremony opened with a presentation of the colors by the Albany High School Color Guard and then first grade shared what they learned about the history of Old Glory, and other symbols of the U.S.A.

Students also led loved ones in the Pledge of Allegiance and performed two patriotic songs.

Thank you to all who came together to celebrate the Stars and Stripes with us!
