During summer break, many families worry about keeping their kids fed without daily access to free meals at school. Summer EBT helps families with eligible school-age children buy food when school is out.

Thank you to Lara Bryn and WRGB CBS 6 News, Albany for helping to raise awareness of Summer EBT, summer meals, and other programs that help kids and families access the food they need. Learn more:

🚨Summer EBT recipients, take action now to protect your benefits!

Many families in other states have had their Summer EBT benefits stolen. The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is urging families to change their Summer EBT card PIN before benefits are distributed on June 15 to protect against theft. Stolen benefits cannot be replaced.

PINs can be changed by phone, through the ebtEdge website, or on the ebtEdge app. Learn more: hungersolutionsny.org/summer-ebt-info-for-families/

A significant outcome of the FY 27 New York State Budget: Full funding for SNAP Navigators.

Under H.R.1, the program is set to lose half its federal funding starting October 1, 2026. The $8.738M included in the budget offsets that reduction, sustaining SNAP outreach and application assistance at a critical moment.

SNAP cuts are already impacting families. Participation has dropped by more than 180,000 New Yorkers since the beginning of 2025, despite worsening food insecurity. That number is expected to increase as work reporting requirements and new eligibility restrictions take effect.

We applaud Governor Hochul, the New York Legislature, and the many advocates and community members whose engagement throughout this budget cycle made this investment possible.

As the federal government reduces access to food assistance, New York has sent a clear message that our state is committed to helping families access and maintain SNAP benefits.

Whether families are interested in learning if they are eligible, need help applying, or have questions about how to comply with the new rules, SNAP Navigators are a free and confidential resource available to all New Yorkers. Visit FoodHelpNY.org to learn more.

As the school year comes to a close, millions of children in New York will lose access to free school meals. Informing families about summer meals, Summer EBT, SNAP, and WIC can make all the difference during the summer months.

Our latest toolkit with No Kid Hungry NY can help with outreach for summer food resources. It includes sample social media captions and graphics, a flyer, and language for newsletters, websites, and other communications.

Last week, state lawmakers voted to adopt the FY27 New York State Budget. We are grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Speaker Carl Heastie for negotiating a budget that protects food access amid rising food insecurity and harmful federal cuts.

We also applaud leaders in the legislature, including Senator Roxanne Persaud, AM Jessica González-Rojas, Senator Lea Webb, Senator Michelle Hinchey, AM Khaleel Anderson and Assemblywoman Maritza Davila, whose advocacy helped ensure critical state investments. Thank you for your commitment to the nearly 3 million New Yorkers struggling to put food on the table and their ability to access SNAP, WIC, and food assistance programs.

We are deeply thankful to the many New Yorkers who spoke up, contacted their elected officials, and asked for a state budget that protects food access. Your voice played a critical role in this budget cycle and will continue to have an impact in the months and years ahead.

Looking forward, our work continues until every New Yorker is free from hunger, poverty, and food insecurity. Read our full statement: hungersolutionsny.org/new-york-state-budget-protects-food-access-with-key-investments
