In accordance with the City Charter, Albany is divided into fifteen (15) legislative districts, or Wards. Each Ward is represented by a City resident who is elected by their constituency to serve a four-year term. Collectively the elected Ward representatives comprise the Common Council, which serves as the legislative branch of Albany’s government. Each Common Council Member functions to regulate and protect the interests of residents within their Ward and is authorized to introduce, adopt, amend or repeal local laws, ordinances, resolutions, and regulations pertaining to property and government affairs within the City. Ward boundaries are established by the Common Council to best represent the demographics within the City and are delineated primarily on Census information.

The Law Committee is calling on organizations and civic groups that would like to present or share thoughts on the proposals for a single unified election and ranked choice voting to participate in the discussions this day. To sign up, please complete the form linked below by selecting "My organization" and entering in your organization's name.

Individuals may speak at public comment at the end of this meeting but are especially encouraged to attend and share their thoughts at the September 29, 2026 meeting, which is dedicated to hearing input from individuals who may have thoughts or comments.

Members of the public are invited to share their thoughts on the removal of primary elections in favor of one single unified election and ranked choice voting before the Law Committee. The meeting will begin with public comment, and individuals will be called up on a first-come-first-served basis. For that reason, individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time but may also sign up upon arrival at the meeting. Albany is planning for the future of our solid waste system, and we want residents to be part of the conversation.

Join us for one of three upcoming community meetings to learn more about the City’s Transfer Station, hear what is being considered for the years ahead, ask questions, and share feedback.

The first meeting will be held virtually on September 22 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
