The Town of Alton is transitioning to a transfer station style cleanup to better manage materials, reduce roadside dumping, and improve efficiency for both residents and volunteers. We plan to go back to cleanups both Spring and Fall 2 times per year. Many surrounding communities have already moved to this model, which has resulted in a large increase of materials being brought into Alton during previous roadside cleanup events. This created larger than expected roadside piles and placed additional strain on town resources and cost the town more money. Additionally, the system was being abused, with individuals leaving significant roadside mess that they expected our hauler to clean up. These included large demolition debris piles, broken glass, rotten food, human waste, piles of cement, and uncut carpets.
By moving to a centralized transfer station style cleanup, the Town can better control incoming materials, ensure proper disposal, and reduce the accumulation of debris along public roads.
Benefits of the New Cleanup Format
โ€ข Reduces roadside dumping and large debris piles throughout town
โ€ข Increases what we can accept
โ€ข Ensures materials are handled safely and properly
โ€ข Provides better traffic flow and supervision
โ€ข Improves SAFETY for volunteers and staff
โ€ข Limits out-of-town dumping by requiring proof of residency
๐“๐ฐ๐จ ๐‚๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐ซ ๐˜๐ž๐š๐ซ
The transfer station style approach allows the Town of Alton to conduct cleanup events twice per year instead of once. The Town plans to offer both a Spring and Fall cleanup, giving residents more opportunities to dispose of materials responsibly. Spring will be the only E-Waste collection.
With the centralized setup, the Town will also be able to accept additional items that were difficult to manage during roadside cleanups, including tires and propane tanks and batteries. This improves service for residents and reduces illegal dumping.
Another key factor in moving to this format is the landfill operating schedule. Because the landfill closes at noon on Saturdays, the Town previously did not have enough time or staff to safely collect, transport, and dispose of all roadside materials in a single day. The transfer station model allows materials to be staged, sorted, and transported more efficiently within the available time frame.
