National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center NWF Great Lakes is the leader in protecting and restoring the Great Lakes for the people and wildlife depending on the world's greatest freshwater resource.

At the Great Lakes Regional Center, NWF works to restore the Great Lakes; stop invasive species; save Lake Superior from sulfide mining; safeguard the Great Lakes from the effects of climate change; defend the Great Lakes from oil pipeline spills; protect water in the Lakes with the Great Lakes Compact; improve the environments where people live; and connect kids with nature. The Great Lakes are the world’s largest surface freshwater ecosystem and contain 20 percent of all surface freshwater on the planet. The five lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – are home to numerous fish and wildlife. But, the Great Lakes are fragile and face serious threats from invasive species, toxins, water diversion, wetland destruction, sewage overflows and climate change. Join us in protecting the Great Lakes for generations to come.

Has “fall cleanup” been on your backyard to-do list? This October, skip the raking and 🍂🍁 Fallen leaves are essential for the health of ecosystems and enriching the nutrient cycle. Along with plant stems, they provide cozy overwintering habitat for chipmunks, birds, butterflies, pollinators & so many more! Plus, leaf litter serves as free mulch that suppresses weeds and fertilizers the soil as it decomposes (thank you for the tip, Prairie Moon Nursery)! It’s less cleanup for you, and more support for your local wildlife! 🦋🐝🐿️🐥

Happy International Raccoon Appreciation Day! These rascally “backyard bandits” are known for scavenging through urban neighborhoods, but they also play a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced and clean. From our very own mascot, Ranger Rick, to Jimothy and beyond, we celebrate this important species and are proud to be a part of the trash panda fan club 🦝❤️

Eastern monarch migration is upon us in the Great Lakes region🌊 From September into early October, North American monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles to reach their oyamel-pine mix forests overwintering grounds in Mexico. And the Great Lakes coastlines are critical migratory corridors, providing safe roosting grounds for rest and shelter, and refueling stations on late-season nectar plants. That’s why one of the best ways to support monarchs is through restoring natural habitat! Planting native milkweeds and nectar plants, such as aster and goldenrod, goes a long way in helping these important pollinators on their epic journey.

⛏️A Canadian mining company wants to build its first-ever copper mine next to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan’s favorite state park. Over 40 million tons of toxic waste would be stored upstream of Lake Superior, one of the largest sources of surface freshwater on the planet, and come within just 500 feet of the North Country Trail. The infrastructure would, furthermore, lay the foundation for data centers and other heavy industries long after the mine closes.

One man has decided to fight back. Meet Tom Grotewohl, the next door neighbor of the state park. When Grotewohl discovered the Copperwood mine proposal and realized that no one was telling the full story, he launched Protect The Porkies . The campaign has collected over 460,000 petition signatures, garnered support from more than 100 organizations, and helped defeat a $50 million state taxpayer grant to the mining company three times through the Michigan Legislature.

🚫Line 5 pipeline operator, Enbridge, is blocking state officials from the site of the 1.3 million gallon spill in Saxon, Wisconsin with federal support from the Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). As mentioned in the letter that environmental groups recently sent to Governor Tony Evers, this is a dangerous escalation of secrecy, risk and defiance that cannot be ignored.

The Director of Climate and Energy from the National Wildlife Federation, Beth Wallace, said, “I have never heard of the federal agency withholding a site from state agency or local officials. There is usually a unified command that is formed that involves all levels of government officials and agencies responding, and in this case, there appears to be a level of preemption that Enbridge and the federal agency is trying to establish.”

Governor Evers has a duty to uphold state laws and we are calling on him to use his authority and immediately revoke Enbridge’s permit for the reroute project! ➡️Speak up: https://support.nwfactionfund.org/page/102181/action/1

👏Michigan decision makers have done the right thing in voicing opposition to the Line 5 tunnel project. Yesterday, the state announced that they’re halting a key environmental tunnel permit and reopening the review.

This news is especially timely, in wake of the recent 1.3 million gallon spill near Saxon, WI — the largest recorded spill in the state. Now, groups have sent a letter to Governor Tony Evers, asking him to use the authority he already has and rise to the same level of leadership around Great Lakes and Tribal treaty protections as Michigan did.

📝The letter demands three things:
1) Revoke Line 5 Reroute permits
2) Demand an independent and transparent investigation
3) Conduct local air and water monitoring to protect public health

🤔Governor Tony Evers, will you take a stand against a foreign corporate giant, or will you allow a business-as-usual status quo to continue despite the clear danger?

➡️Tell the governor of Wisconsin to stop Line 5: https://support.nwfactionfund.org/page/102181/action/1

📍👏Good news: Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to challenge key Line 5 permits puts the Great Lakes first and is a meaningful step in protecting our waters, wildlife, communities, as well as Tribal and cultural resources from irrevocable disaster.

Says Whitmer, “Enbridge cannot use the promise of a tunnel to justify putting our most precious resources at risk by pumping oil through the Great Lakes for another decade. For years, [they] have asked Michigan to accept the risk of the existing pipelines today in exchange for the promise of a safer tunnel tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes. 📢 I am calling on Enbridge to pursue an alternative to both the existing dual pipelines and the tunnel, and to begin that work now.”

Beth Wallace, climate and energy director for the National Wildlife Federation, underscores the importance of this decision amid the ongoing investigation and clean up in Wisconsin’s Line 5 reroute spill. ”This is especially timely, and leaders in Wisconsin should be emboldened to follow suit.”

🚨Line 5 has been shut down for over two weeks after a 1.3 million gallon release near Saxon, Wisconsin. We are calling on Governor Evers to do the right thing and pull back WI permits.

Brandon Road is so back 🎉 (Sorry not sorry, invasive carp!)

After a temporary stop work order on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that construction on this crucial barrier will resume 👏

Keeping out invasive carp is pivotal in protecting our economy and environment, and Brandon Road is the single best way to do that. Invasive carp pose a serious threat to the Great Lakes, the source of drinking water for more than 30 million people, and the linchpin of a multi-billion dollar fishing and recreational boating industry.

Thank you to everyone who spoke out in support of continuing this project — your voices were heard!

🛢️Last week, over 1 million gallons of highly toxic natural gas liquids leaked in Iron County, threatening Wisconsin’s public health, environment and wildlife.

🦢Trumpeter swans were brought back from total extirpation in Northern Wisconsin where they have since been thriving. But now, they face more risks from the Line 5 oil pipeline.

➡️ Tell officials in Wisconsin and Michigan to stop Line 5 before any more damage is done. Link here: https://support.nwfactionfund.org/page/102181/action/1
