Henry John Heinz, the son of German immigrants, built an empire on the values his parents brought from the old country: hard work, quality, and trust.

In this installment of Shaping 250 — Faces of the German American Story, German Historical Institute's Atiba Pertilla explores how Heinz’s ketchup became an iconic staple of picnics and cookouts—and how his story shows that an immigrant-founded company can become woven into the everyday life of a nation. 🇩🇪🇺🇸

: On August 13, 1961, East Germany sealed off West Berlin, beginning construction of the Berlin Wall. What started as barbed wire hardened into concrete and guard towers, dividing a city - and a nation - for the next 28 years. Few structures in modern history have symbolized division as starkly as this one did.

On this 65th anniversary of the Wall's construction, we remember those who suffered under that division, honor those who lost their lives attempting to escape, and reflect on the unwavering desire for freedom that ultimately led to the Wall's fall in 1989.

The German-American friendship played a vital role throughout this period: from the Berlin Airlift to President Kennedy's words "Ich bin ein Berliner" and President Reagan's call to "tear down this wall."

The Wall may have fallen, but the enduring lesson remains: freedom and democracy require vigilance and resolve.

Stop overthinking your next trip, let us help you! Pick one emoji on slide 1 and let it steer your next German getaway. 🌊🏕️🪐⛰️

⛰️ In the mood for mountains: Seealpsee is a turquoise lake tucked between dramatic peaks in the Allgäu Alps. The view at the top is impeccable, but as Hannah Montana already said, “It’s all about the climb.”

🌊 Want to see the sea: Kniepsand on Amrum is one of Europe’s largest bathing beaches. It’s an enormous, ever-shifting sandbank that can stretch for kilometers, with a walk to the water that feels like crossing a tiny desert by the North Sea.

🏕️ Getting forest fever: Ancient beech woods and a treetop walkway in Hainich National Park, Thuringia. A place where you should literally go and touch some grass.

🪐 Craving constellations: The Eifel Dark Sky Park can be pure magic - minimal light pollution, seriously good stargazing, and maybe even a glimpse of the Milky Way on a clear night.

Which emoji did you choose and who’s coming with you?
Drop it in the comments and tag your travel buddy.

Levi Strauss arrived in California as a young immigrant from Bavaria during the Gold Rush, where he saw an opportunity to create durable clothing for hardworking miners.

Together with his business partner, he helped invent the riveted blue jean— an innovation that became one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture. 👖

In this installment of Shaping 250 — Faces of the German American Story, we celebrate the lasting legacy of a German immigrant whose ingenuity didn't just become part of American culture, but helped define it. 🇩🇪🇺🇸
