We're #1! 👏 Texas now leads the nation in Research 1 (R1) Institutions. To get this designation, institutions must receive $50 million in total research funding and award 70 research doctorates each year.

This ranking reflects our state’s strategic investment in research capacity and strengthens the ability to attract top faculty, students, federal research funding, and private sector innovation.

Commissioner Wynn Rosser recently visited Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Central Texas College and got a firsthand look at what’s possible when institutions work together to create strong pathways for students.

At TAMU-CT, he joined faculty and staff for their fall convocation to talk about the critical role transfer students play in building a talent-strong Texas. At Central Texas College, he met with students and campus leaders and saw programs preparing Texans for high-demand careers in health care, skilled trades, and other essential fields.

Together, these institutions are showing what strong transfer partnerships can make possible.

When transfer works, students keep the credits they’ve earned, spend less time and money completing their education, and enter the workforce sooner.
That’s good for students and employers, and it helps build the skilled workforce and strong communities Texas needs to thrive.

THECB Director of Student Success Waylon Metoyer spoke at a conference highlighting the statewide support for pregnant and parenting students. Through policies, dedicated campus parenting student liaisons, grant funding and data-informed initiatives, Texas helps parenting students achieve their educational and career goals. Our agency has provided more than $2.4 million in funding to institutions across the state supporting enhanced services, evidence-based practices and resources that help pregnant and parenting students succeed.

The THECB announced the newest grant recipients for the Student Success Acceleration Program (SSAP) 3.0. The grants will help scale, enhance, redesign, and implement programs supporting undergraduate student persistence, completion, and workforce readiness. Twenty institutions of higher education across the state will each receive $300,000. More details and the full list of recipients can be found at the link below:

Governor Greg Abbott today announced more than $5.6 million in grants to eight Texas colleges and universities. The Nursing Innovation Grant Program (NIGP) supports new and expanded projects that improve or extend nursing programs. The awards fund innovative prelicensure educational programs for nursing students and expand healthcare workforce capacity across the state. Read the full press release at the link below:

A major higher ed policy opportunity was adopted at our Board meeting! The University Performance Based Funding Report is the result of a year's worth of collaboration between the THECB and an Executive Committee made up of university and system leadership. The report presents options to the Legislature for a potential university funding formula focused on outcomes and student success. Our goal is to help students launch successful, in-demand careers.
