The State Bar of Texas Board of Directors held its final meeting of the 2025-2026 bar year on June 10 in Houston.
Highlights from the meeting include:
President Santos Vargas reported on the success of the “Stand With Santos” access to justice initiative, which raised more than $600,000 in combined direct donations and pro bono pledges. Monetary donations go directly to the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.
President-elect G. David Smith reported that the State Bar presented its FY 2026-2027 proposed budget to the Texas Supreme Court on April 27, marking the final step in a budget process that began in August 2025. The court issued an order on May 6 approving a final budget.
Executive Director Trey Apffel reported that the Texas Opportunity & Justice Incubator (TOJI) has launched its 10th cohort, its largest ever with 34 members, following a record number of applications. The State Bar program aims to expand access to justice by supporting Texas lawyers who are building sustainable law practices serving low- and modest-income Texans.
🌟 Vargas presented presidential citations to Texas Supreme Court Senior Justice Debra Lehrmann, Texas Supreme Court Justice Evan Young, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Jesse McClure, Texas Access to Justice Commission Chair Harriet Miers, Texas Access to Justice Foundation Executive Director Betty Balli Torres, the State Bar of Texas Hispanic Lawyers Section, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the San Antonio Estate Planners Council.
