Lyndon Johnson, 1966

"On this Memorial Day, it is right for us to remember the living and the dead for whom the call of their country has meant much pain and sacrifice."

"Peace does not come just because we wish for it. Peace must be fought for. It must be built stone by stone."

May we never forget!!!! Thank you to those who have given up their freedom, life, and peace for our great country!

โ€œLa Porte County friends and neighbors, we are asking for our community to rise up, rally together, and lift Deputy Jon Samuelson and his family in prayer and support during this incredibly challenging time.

Now more than ever, we need our residents across the county to stand together in strength, faith, and support for one of our own. Deputy Samuelson has dedicated his life to serving and protecting this county, and we ask everyone now to stand beside him and his loved ones with prayer and solidarity.

Please keep Jon, his family, and the entire LCSO law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers.โ€

Our thoughts and prayers are going out to Deputy Jon Samuelson from the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Samuelson stopped to assist a stranded motorist near Michigan City, Indiana. The motorist requested Deputy Samuelson transport him the the Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. After Samuelson dropped him off, he was alerted to the fact hat the suspect was implicated in a criminal event that had taken place just a short time before Samuelson happened into him.

Once this discovery was made, Samuelson went into the hospital to try and locate the suspect. Samuelson was immediately fired upon by the suspect and was struck several times.

Samuelson was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The 22-year-old suspect from Chicago, ILL. was apprehended shortly afterwards in a wooded area near the hospital.

Our hearts and prayers are going out to Deputy Samuelson, his family and the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department.

The Indiana Sheriffs' Association announced and will be celebrating their 46th Annual Indiana Sheriffs' Association Youth Leadership Camp which will be held in June 2026.

There will be two camp sessions this year, the first session will be held June 15-17, 2026, serving the Southern part of the state at the Indiana FFA Leadership Camp in Trafalgar, Indiana (Johnson County). The second session will be held June 22-24, 2026, serving the Northern part of the state at Pine Creek Camp in Pine Village, Indiana (Warren County).

The Indiana Sheriffs' Association Youth Leadership Camp is a program provided by the Indiana Sheriffs' Association for boys and girls who are currently in the 7th or 8th grade of school and are interested in learning more about a possible career in law enforcement.

The camp provides a very meaningful experience and relationship with other campers from throughout the state and sheriff officers who serve as counselors and instructors.

Any boy or girl currently in the 7th or 8th grade of school interested in attending the camp should contact the Sheriff's Office or your school counselor for an application and additional information. The Sheriff announced that arrangements can possibly be made to provide the camp registration fee through a local business or civic organization for anyone interested.

For more information, please contact your local Sheriff's office or Lauren Hess, Program Administrator for the Indiana Sheriffs' Association at [email protected].

Whether youโ€™re fishing, cruising, or just spending the day on the water with family and friends, a few simple safety steps can make all the difference:

โ€ข Always wear a life jacket and make sure children are properly fitted
โ€ข Never boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs
โ€ข Check weather and river conditions before heading out
โ€ข Make sure your boat has proper safety equipment onboard
โ€ข Stay alert for other boaters, debris, and changing river conditions

The Ohio River is a great resource for our community, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely and responsibly. Our River Patrol unit is proud to work together to help keep our waterways safe throughout the boating season.

Have fun, stay safe, and weโ€™ll see you on the water!
