Last week, members of the Avon Fire Department visited the 3rd grade classes at Butler Elementary School to talk about the importance of smoke alarms, home escape planning, and general fire safety.

The program was part of the “Sound Off with the Home Fire Safety Patrol” initiative, made possible through a FEMA grant. In addition to classroom education, the program also provides home visits and smoke alarm installation assistance for families who may not have working smoke alarms in their homes.

Working smoke alarms save lives. We are proud to partner with our schools and community to help ensure every family in Avon has the protection they need.

If your family needs assistance with smoke alarms or would like more information about the program, please contact the Avon Fire Department.

Thank you to the students and staff at Butler Elementary for welcoming us into your classrooms!

Yesterday, the Avon MA Fire Department and the Avon Board of Health held the first of our Stroke Awareness and Prevention Sessions at the Avon Council on Aging.
We would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in a great discussion about:

Recognizing the warning signs of stroke

Understanding risk factors

Learning how to reduce stroke risk

Knowing when to call 911

We also offered free blood pressure screenings and discussed the importance of “knowing your numbers,” since high blood pressure remains the number one risk factor for stroke.
If you were unable to attend, there is still time to sign up for one of our remaining sessions. These presentations are free and include a light lunch.

This information could help you recognize a stroke early and potentially save the life of a family member, friend, or neighbor.
Registration information: https://forms.office.com/r/1kmGWfr6Th
We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming session.

The Avon Fire Department is pleased to announce that we have been awarded two important fire safety education grants through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

We have received a Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Grant in the amount of $3,422.98 and a Senior SAFE Grant in the amount of $1,747.50.

These funds will support critical fire and life safety education efforts in our community, allowing us to:

Deliver age-appropriate fire safety programs to Avon’s students
Provide seniors with education on fire prevention, cooking safety, and emergency preparedness
Distribute life-saving safety materials and resources
Continue proactive outreach to reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities

Programs like SAFE and Senior SAFE play a vital role in preventing fires before they happen—especially among our most vulnerable populations.

We thank the Commonwealth for its continued investment in community risk reduction and public safety.

Avon Fire Department Reminds Residents to Change Clocks and Check Alarms for Daylight Saving Time: With Daylight Saving Time beginning Sunday, March 8, the Avon Fire Department reminds residents to change their clocks ahead one hour and check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.

Working alarms provide early warning during a fire or CO emergency, giving residents the time they need to get out safely. Residents should test each alarm, replace batteries if needed and make sure alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, about three out of five fire deaths nationwide occur in homes where smoke alarms are missing or not working. Fire officials recommend replacing smoke alarms every 10 years and checking the manufacturing date printed on the back of each device. CO alarms typically need replacement every five, seven, or 10 years depending on the model.

🚨 AVON WINTER STORM ALERT – Blizzard Conditions Possible (Next 24 Hours) 🚨

A major winter storm is expected to impact Avon with heavy snow (potentially up to 2 feet) and strong winds, creating dangerous travel, possible whiteout conditions, and the risk of power outages.

Please take a few minutes today to get ready:

❄️ Travel

Avoid travel if you can—conditions can deteriorate quickly.

If you must drive: slow down, give plows space, and keep a winter car kit (blanket, flashlight, charger, water).

🏠 Home & Heating Safety

Check your smoke & CO alarms (test them now).

Keep anything that heats 3 feet away from combustibles.

Never use grills/ovens/generators indoors or in garages.

⚡ Power Outage Prep

Charge phones, gather flashlights (avoid candles), and have extra batteries ready.

If you use a generator: outdoors only, well away from doors/windows/vents.

🚒 Help Us Help You

Clear a path to your front door and make sure house numbers are visible.

If safe to do so, please clear hydrants near your home.

Keep snow away from dryer and furnace vents to prevent CO hazards.

👀 Check on Neighbors

Please check in on elderly neighbors and anyone who may need help preparing.

As always, for emergencies call 911. Stay safe, Avon—limit travel and let crews work.

Although Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week came to a close on January 25th, we want to take a moment to highlight what CRR really means for our community.

CRR is about more than emergency response — it’s about identifying risks before an emergency happens and taking meaningful steps to reduce injuries, fires, and loss of life. That work includes education, inspections, data analysis, and strong partnerships throughout our community.

We’re proud to share that the Avon Fire Department was awarded a grant from Vision 20/20 to conduct a Community Risk Assessment (CRA). This assessment will allow us to analyze local data, identify trends and hazards specific to our town, and better target our prevention, education, and enforcement efforts where they will have the greatest impact.

The CRA will help guide future initiatives such as fire prevention programs, life safety education, and strategic resource planning — all with the goal of making our community safer. The final version should be released shortly, continue to watch our posts for important safety information for the community based on the town specific data that went into this CRA.

Thank you to our residents, partners, and fire department members who support this important work every day. Prevention saves lives, and CRR is at the heart of what we do.
