On July 28th, the Avon Fire Department responded to back-to-back fires that serve as important reminders about preventing fires in our community.
Waste Management Recycling Facility – Ledin Drive
Crews responded to a fire inside the drum feeder of the Waste Management recycling facility. The building's automatic sprinkler system quickly controlled the fire, preventing it from spreading throughout the facility. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours extinguishing hot spots and ensuring the fire was completely out.
The fire is believed to have been caused by improperly discarded materials, most likely a lithium-ion battery.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in household trash or curbside recycling bins. Damaged or discarded batteries can be crushed during the recycling process, causing fires that endanger workers, damage equipment, and disrupt operations.
To recycle batteries safely:
🔋 Use designated battery recycling drop-off locations.
🔋 Tape the terminals of loose lithium-ion batteries before transporting them.
🔋 Never throw rechargeable batteries into household trash or single-stream recycling.
Residential Fire – Malley Avenue
Later in the day, firefighters responded to a mulch fire outside a single-family home that quickly spread to the home's vinyl siding.
Fortunately, crews had just returned from the recycling facility fire and were still at the station cleaning equipment. Because firefighters were already assembled, Avon Fire was able to place nine firefighters on scene within two minutes of dispatch, allowing crews to quickly stop the fire before it spread into the home.
With the hot, dry weather we've experienced this summer, mulch, dry vegetation, and other combustible landscaping materials can ignite rapidly from discarded smoking materials, grills, fireworks, or any open flame.
Please help prevent these fires by:
• Keeping grills, smokers, and fire pits well away from mulch, decks, and siding.
• Properly disposing of smoking materials.
• Never parking hot vehicles or equipment over dry grass.
• Watering mulch and landscaping during prolonged dry periods when practical.
• Remaining vigilant whenever using any open flame outdoors.
