This week, Ms. Jenn helped kids explore the wonders of fossils with two activities. First, we created a fun dish out of some of the oldest fossils around…seashells! Then we practiced how Paleontologists dig for fossils by using chocolate chip cookies. Such fun!

Did you know the first woman mayor in the United States was elected in Kansas?

We were grateful to have so many neighbors join us for John Burchill’s engaging and informative presentation on the People, Places, and Politics of 1800s Kansas. This Humanities Kansas program was a part of the One Book, Many Neighbors series, and John did a wonderful job putting Dragon Teeth into the context of a fascinating time in our state’s history.

This year's OBMN selection, Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton, is set in 1876 during the “Bone Wars” of dinosaur fossil hunting in the American West and includes connections to Kansas paleontologists.

John Burchill, Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at Kansas Wesleyan University will lead this Humanities Kansas presentation on the People, Places, and Politics in 1800s Kansas. Pioneer James R. Mead was a man of his times. Interested in commerce, politics, and conservation, he settled in the Kansas Territory in the 1850s. Known now as one of Wichita’s founding fathers, Mead was also influential as a trails outfitter, statesman, and railroad booster. What can be learned from Mead’s influence on the state’s early development?

Join us Wednesday evening for a special presentation in honor of the Juneteenth federal holiday!

Special guest Victor Webb, Director of the Department of Public Safety Housing Authority of Kansas City, will speak about the history of congressional redistricting in Kansas and how it affected district maps, divided communities, and the legal challenges it presented.

Victor Webb is a native Kansan, whose parents fought segregation in the Merriam school district. The efforts led to a landmark 1949 Kansas Supreme Court decision in their favor.

We had a wonderful time at yesterday's Container Gardening program!

Jessica got to share her knowledge and passion for native and pollinator-friendly plants with participants as they filled their containers with beautiful greenery.

The secret's out — Nugget has been hanging out over at City of Basehor, KS, and today's his last day there!

Nugget told us this was his last day at City Hall. :( He is returning home to the Basehor Community Library for the weekend. 👋🏻
