This week Deschutes Public Library shared a post recognizing Juneteenth and informing our community about our closure for this federally recognized holiday. In response, we received a significant number of comments from individuals containing racist and hateful language. We want to be clear about what we stand for.

Deschutes Public Library does not tolerate racism, hate speech, or harassment in any form. The comments posted do not reflect our values.

Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and we are proud to recognize it. Celebrating the diversity of our community is core to who we are, and we will continue to do so. We remain committed to building a community space, online and in person, where everyone feels welcome and respected.

Thank you to everyone who continues to show up in the community with kindness and respect. We are grateful for you.

Meet Jenny Pedersen, a Community Librarian at Deschutes Public Library, where she helps provide public access to legal resources through the Law Library. She supports programs like Lawyer in the Library, Notary Public in the Library, and Re-Entry Weeklies, helping people navigate everything from housing to employment. Recently recognized as a 2026 Library Journal Mover & Shaker, Jenny says she loves helping people find the information they need to move forward.

We are officially celebrating one full month at Central Library... and the numbers are BIG. 🎉 In just one month, Central Library welcomed more than 60,000 visitors, issued nearly 100 library cards per day 🫢, and checked out more than 80,000 items.

For comparison, in May 2025, the Downtown Bend and East Bend libraries combined welcomed 30,196 visitors. Wow!
