There's something special about seeing the WE Build team lay this kitchen floor down.

Less than a year ago, they pulled broken tiles to discover mold all through subfloor.

They pulled it apart.

They rebuilt it.

And this week, they've been laying the boards for a new foundation of Saturday-morning breakfasts and fifth-grade math homework.

That's because Gerica completed the first year of her WE Cafe apprenticeship!

And today, Chef Lawanda celebrated her second year making great food in West End with a wonderful vegetable plate!

What a joy it is experience the community they nurture day in and day out at the WE Cafe!!

Transformation . . .

It’s what Thomas says whenever he’s s asked why rebuilding homes is such a cause for joy.

Transformation. Sometimes, it’s bathroom tiles. Sometimes, fresh windows. Lately, it’s been a whole lot of drywall.

Will you celebrate all these little transformations? As Thomas knows, they're all just seeds of much bigger transformation around the corner in West End!

The WE Cafe is more than a good place to find great food in West End.

It's also a teaching kitchen for two apprentices learning to build community through food!

Last week, the WE Cafe apprentices and staff had a bake-off.

They made peach pies. They made buttermilk pies. And they competed on taste and presentation!

The Wednesday-Morning Food Coop gets together every other week and packs emergency snack bags.

This month all but one table was put to service for summer house painting. But the members didn't let the tight spaces or the close quarters stop them from making sure every neighbor has enough food!

It was a pleasant surprise to have a vital member of Thistle Farm‘s leadership team stop by to visit and share her thoughts and well wishes. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Urban Ministry, Becca Stevens of Thistle Farms delivered a special message to Birmingham on how social enterprise is at work in West End.
