The City of Birmingham is working in partnership with Alabama Power and ALDOT to restore interstate lighting throughout the city.
As of this week, the City has been working to improve interstate lighting on 59/20 West toward Ensley. These lights are being upgraded to LED and being fitted with new anti-vandalism technology to ensure the lighting system is built to last.
On top of that project, there is a $1 million project to restore interstate lighting on 59/20 East toward the airport. This project will be complete in January 2020.
On I-65 South, the City of Birmingham is focusing on restoring interstate lighting at the Green Springs and University Boulevard interchanges.
The City of Birmingham has an agreement with Alabama Power to maintain the lighting systems on Highway 280.
As the new 59/20 bridge is constructed, we are working with ALDOT to ensure that lighting is installed along the new bridge system.
Over time, we will be sending City crews out to I-59 N to restore interstate lighting there as well.
These new and restored interstate lighting systems will be using new technology to prevent vandalism and ensure that our lighting systems are built to last.
Are you a resident of the Southside community? We want your feedback!
Come meet with us on Monday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. at the Glen Iris Elementary School!
