Trauma, Spirituality & Therapy
A LIVE INTERATIVE REAL TIME VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
FOR MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIANS

Presented by: Andrea Mathews, MA, LPC
Friday, June 9, 2023
9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Providing 6 NBCC and 6 ABSWE contact hours

One of the most common reasons for therapy is trauma. We have come to an evolution in the practice of therapy, in which we must consider and work with the damage to the human spirit done by trauma. We are being challenged to bring the spiritual element to therapy to facilitate the healing of that spirit. What, for example, does trauma say to the human spirit? How can a person restore a sense of Self and safety through spirituality? What exactly can we, as therapists, bring to the traumatized human spirit sitting across from us? This workshop intends to answer these and many other questions regarding trauma, spirituality, and therapy.

OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Consider the DSM 5 definitions of trauma and PTSD and the new WHO definition of C-PTSD.
• Explain why we need to address trauma through spirituality.
• Consider the impact of some of the various religious practices and their effects on trauma.
• Define spirituality.
• Explain both the positives and negative possibilities of religious practice on our clients.
• Name and describe several spiritual/therapeutic interventions to heal the effects of trauma.
