This past Tuesday, we served a record-breaking 223 meals at our Fork & Spoon restaurant, all within our two-hour dinner service.

With approximately 200 people joining us for dinner each evening, our kitchen has been busy! Our team and volunteers put tremendous care into preparing and serving meals, welcoming guests, and making sure everyone has a place at the table, regardless of their ability to pay.

Thank you to the team, volunteers, and donors who make these dinners possible. You’re helping us keep our neighbors fed, one evening at a time.

✨ Meet Zach, our Food Rescue Coordinator! ✨

Hi I’m Zach, the new Food Rescue Coordinator for HRDC. I’m responsible for facilitating the pickup of food rescue items from many local grocers and businesses. My hope is to continue aiding the Gallatin Valley Food Bank in providing access to food for those in need, and in doing so help the organization continue in its profoundly beneficial contributions to our community. Having lived in Bozeman since high school it is incredibly motivating and fulfilling to be a part of such an impactful organization in my hometown.

One of the greatest privileges of Emma Hamburg’s role as HRDC Marketing & Visual Design Coordinator is getting to sit down with the people who use our services, hear about their lives, and share their stories. Through our Where Would We Be Without HRDC? series, Emma helps tell the stories behind the services we provide. Today, she’s sharing Beth’s story.

When I arrived at Beth’s apartment for our interview, there was a bowl of Halloween candy waiting on the table. She’d gone out and bought it just for my visit.

Beth had spent the morning making sure everything was in its place. In fact, she’d waited nearly two months to invite me over. After years of experiencing homelessness, she wanted her apartment to feel like a home before sharing her story. For many of us, decorating a living room, welcoming a guest, or choosing where to put a new plant are everyday things we take for granted. For Beth, those choices mean everything.

Beth has experienced homelessness on and off since she was 14. With support from HRDC and community partners like PACT, she recently moved into an apartment of her own. The first night, she slept on the floor. But her support team quickly helped her find a bed, chairs, a desk, etc. and piece by piece, the apartment began to feel like hers.

Today, there are art supplies, plants with names, a comfortable couch, and a kitten named Taco-Nacho. There’s room to rest, focus on her health, and simply feel safe.

”I’m not worried about where my next meal is coming from at this point. I’m not worried about where I’m gonna get water,” Beth shared. After years of uncertainty, having a door to close and a safe place to return to has changed her daily life.

When I asked about her past, Beth was clear: “I’m not homeless anymore. So I’m gonna leave the past behind.” “Let’s go on with the future, because my future’s looking kind of bright at this moment.”

Where would Beth be without HRDC? Her story reminds us that housing is more than a roof overhead. It’s safety, independence, and the freedom to make a space your own. For Beth, it’s plants, art, a kitten, and a bowl of Halloween candy waiting for a guest. It’s home.

We love our volunteers!

Last week, we celebrated our Gallatin Valley Food Bank volunteers with a costume party in our warehouse. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a wonderful event!

Volunteers are the engine that keeps our food bank running. Every day, around 20 volunteers help make our operations possible. They pick up grocery store donations, clean our warehouse, check in food bank customers, stock shelves, check expiration dates on donated items, and bag groceries for our customers.

A Brighter Day at Homeward Point!

A family tradition of hard work and giving back is making a difference for people in our community.

Chad Wilkinson, owner of Cold Smoke Cleaners, has spent years making windows sparkle across the Gallatin Valley. Recently, he brought that work to HRDC, donating his time and services to clean windows and brighten the spaces where people in our community find support.

For Chad, giving back was a way to make a difference without needing a big budget. After living in the area for 16 years, he had seen people experiencing homelessness and wanted to find a practical way to help. By donating his time and expertise, he could make the places where people stay a little cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming.

One moment at Homeward Point, our emergency shelter, has stayed with him. “Seeing families come through the doors was emotional, as was later seeing friends need housing support themselves. Those experiences were a reminder that circumstances can change for anyone, and that having a safe place to turn matters.”

“The workers of HRDC are very friendly and genuine,” Chad shared. “They are there to give back and support. They don’t judge and give the benefit of the doubt.”

And the family connection? In the first photo Chad is pictured on a ladder at just two years old, helping at his parents’ house 32 years ago. In the next is Chad’s son now helping with the same type of work.

It’s a full-circle moment for a business owner who wants giving back to be part of what he passes on. Chad hopes to make the window cleaning an annual tradition, helping us keep our spaces bright and welcoming for the people who rely on them.

Where would we be without community members like Chad, who find meaningful ways to show up for their neighbors? We’re grateful to Cold Smoke Cleaners for helping make Homeward Point a brighter place.

In classic Montana fashion, winter came early this year, and our community needs a little extra warmth.

With the season’s first snowfall already here Homeward Point is in need of warm winter essentials for individuals and families staying at the shelter.

We’re accepting donations of warm coats, winter boots, hats, gloves, blankets and other cold-weather gear. Every item makes a difference in helping our neighbors stay warm and safe as we head into winter.

Want to help? Donations can be dropped off at Homeward Point (208 E Griffin Drive) Monday through Friday. Thank you for helping us look out for our neighbors as the weather gets colder!

When young people need mental health care, access can’t wait. For years, families in Southwest Montana have faced long waits or traveled far from home to find support for their children.

That’s why HRDC helped bring partners, funding, and resources together to help make Lighthouse Ranch a reality.

Located on more than 30 acres near Belgrade, the campus will provide youth behavioral health services ranging from community-based care to post-crisis stabilization and residential treatment.

HRDC’s role was never to become a behavioral health provider. It was to listen to what our community needed, help organize a response, secure resources, and create the foundation for a lasting solution.

Together, project partners have raised $6.5 million toward the $8.5 million campaign, including $4 million raised and stewarded through HRDC.

In September, ownership of Lighthouse Ranch officially transitioned to Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, which will lead the next phase of development.

We’re proud to have helped turn a community need into a lasting resource that will bring care, stability, and healing closer to home for Montana youth.
