Car vs Motorcycles leads to serious injuries

At 9:30 this morning, Canton Fire, Canton Rescue and County Car 4 were dispatched to a reported Car vs Motorcycle accident with possible serious injuries on State Highway 310 near the Finnigan Road.

Canton 4-2 (Chief E. Johnson) checked enroute at the time of alarm and immediately requested Dispatch to check on the availability on air medical resources. Rescue 1 and Engine 6 responded at 0938 hours.

Upon arrival 4-2 requested ALS ambulances to the scene and to expedite as Canton Rescue already had their two crews out on a 911 call and an interfacility transport. Dispatch immediately brought in 1 ambulance from Ogdensburg, 2 from Potsdam and 1 from Madrid.

Both Engine 6 and Rescue 1’s crews went to work with patient care assisting the Sheriffs deputies, who had already applied tourniquets on two of the patients with severe injuries. One patient had an obvious open fracture of the lower leg, a second with an obvious open fracture of the femur, as well as the third with an ankle injury and minor lacerations.

Madrid A-201 with Ogdensburg ALS transported one patient to a landing zone set up at Hermon DeKalb School by DeKalb Junction Fire to meet the LifeNet 7-10 helicopter. Canton A-131 transported the second patient to CPH, with Potsdam A-264 transporting the third.

State Highway 310 was closed for approximately three hours for scene operations and safety, as well as the subsequent investigation. Canton Fire would like to thank all mutual aid for their support.

All Canton Fire units were back in service at 1207 hours.

Units: 4-1 (Chief Cary), 4-2 (Chief Johnson), Rescue 1 (Past Chief McCluskey), Engine 6 (Past Chief Morgan), Rescue 36 (P. McCluskey)

One Car MVA

At 9:08 AM, Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and Car 4 were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident involving a car that swerved to avoid a deer and ran off the road into the trees. Canton Rescue arrived at 9:17 AM, followed closely by 4-2 and 4-1. The driver was initially trapped, but Rescue 1 coordinated with Johnson's Towing to secure the vehicle using a hitch setup. Grain Bin Fire and MVA

At 15:02, Canton Fire Department, Canton Rescue, and SLC Car 4 were dispatched to Bordeau Bros for a reported fire in a grain bin. Assistant Chief Johnson arrived on scene within minutes and confirmed an active fire in an overhead grain bin silo, and assumed command of the incident. Due to the increased risk of possible escalation, command requested mutual aid from Potsdam Fire for Tower 5 (as Canton Tower 1 was out of service for repairs) and tankers from Potsdam Fire, West Potsdam Fire, Pierrepont Fire, and Pyrites Fire. It was decided by command, in consultation with facility personnel, to empty the grain bin in order to reach and extinguish the burning material. All units cleared the scene at 18:08.

At 16:15, a motor vehicle accident occurred in front of the fire incident on Route 11 involving a car and tractor trailer. Canton Fire and Rescue, along with mutual aid units, responded to the scene. Traffic was temporarily rerouted around the area until the roadway was cleared. All units cleared the motor vehicle accident call at 17:56.

Members Train On MVA Scenario

As the culmination of the weekly training held throughout the month, the Canton Fire Department conducted a realistic Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) drill tonight. This exercise allowed our personnel to gain hands-on experience with our hydraulic extrication tools (Jaws of Life) and simulate real-world emergency response scenarios. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Johnson's Towing for generously allowing us to utilize their facility for this essential training.

Units: Rescue 1 (Firefighter W. Stripp) and Engine 7 (Firefighter P. McCluskey)

Congrats to our winner Cole!

Canton Firefighters J. Burdick and D. Johnson recently paid a special visit to a local student to deliver a unique prize: a ride in a fire truck. The student earned the honor during Recruitment Week by winning the "Halligan Hold" contest, outlasting all other participants in a test of endurance. The Halligan weighs approximately 10 lb. Congratulations to our winner on a display of impressive strength and stamina!
