What happened today? Today, 9/4/2026, the Eddy County Board of County Commissioners met during a special meeting to approve the State issued property tax rates.
Why did the Board have a special meeting today? State law requires County Commissions to approve the tax rates that are provided by the State within 5 days of receiving the tax rates from the State. Eddy County received the tax rates from the State on August 31, 2026. This is a routine item that happens every year. The property tax rates in Eddy County are some of the lowest rates in New Mexico.
What property tax rates did the Board approve? Most property tax rates went down and some stayed the same. The Board approved the property tax rates from the State for each entity in Eddy County. This includes: each city, each school district, special watershed districts, Artesia General Hospital District, Southeast New Mexico College, Eddy County and the State of New Mexico.
What do property taxes pay for? Most of the property taxes pay for our public schools. The County also uses property tax dollars to pay for law enforcement and corrections, road maintenance, and other county operations.
