One story can create a ripple. 🌊

Someone shares their recovery experience.

Another person realizes they aren't alone.

A family begins to understand substance use differently.

An employer reconsideres an assumption.

A community recognizes a gap in services.

A person who was afraid to ask for help realizes recovery might be possible for them, too.

That's the power of lived experience.

When we listen to people in recovery, their stories can help us build communities that respond with support instead of shame, opportunity instead of judgment, and hope instead of stigma.

πŸ’œ Every story shared can help create a more recovery-ready community.

πŸ’œ September 11 | Know It Before You Need It

One of the best times to learn about crisis resources is before there's a crisis.

Save 988 in your phone today.

Tell your family about it. Share it with a friend. Make sure young people in your life know it exists. Include it in workplace and school resources.

And remember that support doesn't begin and end with a phone number. Trusted people, counselors, health care providers, behavioral health clinics, crisis teams, and other community resources can all become part of someone's support system.

We don't learn where the fire extinguisher is while the kitchen is already smoking.

Mental health resources deserve the same preparation.

πŸ’œ Know where to turn. Help someone else know, too.

Stronger Together: Connect. Support. Prevent.

Your recovery story belongs to you. πŸ’œ

Sharing lived experience can be incredibly powerful. It can give someone hope, create connection, challenge stigma, and show others that recovery is possible.

But sharing your story should always be your choice.

No one owes anyone the details of their recovery journey.

Whether you celebrate loudly, share your experiences publicly, tell only the people closest to you, or keep your journey entirely private, your recovery is still worth celebrating.

Every recovery story matters, including the ones we never hear.

🀲 September 10 | You Are Not Alone

You don't have to carry everything by yourself.

Help can look like calling 988.

But it can also look like texting a friend, sitting with someone you trust, talking with a counselor, contacting a community behavioral health provider, or simply telling someone:

β€œI'm not doing okay, and I need some support.”

Asking for help doesn't have to happen only at the worst possible moment.

Reach out when you're overwhelmed.
Reach out when you're hurting.
Reach out when you don't know what comes next.

There are people who want to help you find the next step. πŸ’œπŸ©΅

You are not alone. Help is available whenever you need it.

Sometimes the most powerful challenge to stigma is a human story.

Stigma can make substance use disorder feel like an abstract issue happening to β€œother people.”

Stories remind us otherwise.

People in recovery are our family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, classmates, community leaders, and loved ones.

When lived experiences are welcomed into community conversations, they can challenge assumptions and help replace judgment with understanding.

And you don't have to share your own story to help.

You can listen when someone else shares theirs. πŸ’œ

🌎 September 9 | Help Should Be Accessible

Support should be available to as many people as possible.

The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline offers specialized and accessible options, including support for Spanish speakers, Veterans and service members, Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and interpretation for many languages.

Because there isn't one type of person who struggles.

And there shouldn't be only one way to ask for help.

Knowing your options before you or someone you love needs them can make reaching out easier when a difficult moment comes.

πŸ“± Save 988 in your phone.
πŸ’œ Share it with someone you love.

Recovery deserves to be celebrated! πŸŽ‰

So often, conversations about substance use focus entirely on crisis, loss, or statistics.

Those conversations matter, but they aren't the whole story.

There are also milestones being reached. Relationships being rebuilt. Goals being accomplished. Families reconnecting. People discovering new passions, creating stability, helping others, and building lives they are proud of.

During Recovery Month, we make room for those stories too.

Today, we celebrate the power of recovery and every person writing their next chapter. πŸ’œ

🩡 September 8 | What Happens When You Contact 988?

Reaching out for help can feel a little less intimidating when you know what to expect.

When you call, text, or chat 988, you are connected with a trained crisis counselor who will listen, help you talk through what you're experiencing, and work with you to determine what support may help.

You don't need to know exactly what to say.

You don't need to prove that things are β€œbad enough.”

You can start with something as simple as:

β€œI'm having a really hard time and I don't know what to do.”

That's enough to begin. πŸ’œ

Every recovery story matters. πŸ’œ

Recovery doesn’t look the same for everyone, and neither does the story behind it.

For one person, a milestone might be years in recovery. For another, it might be making the decision to ask for help. It might be rebuilding a relationship, returning to school, finding stable housing, starting a new job, or discovering who they are outside of substance use.

When people are able to share their experiences, we get to see recovery for what it really is: real people building meaningful lives.

This week, we’re celebrating those stories.

Share hope. Reduce stigma.
