Eddy County Sheriff's Office Investigating Death

(Eddy County, New Mexico)

Sheriff Matt Hutchinson reports that on Saturday, May 23, 2026, the Eddy County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) responded to Capitan Reef Road where it crosses over the Pecos River, commonly referred to as "the chutes", in reference to an adult male who was unconscious and not breathing from apparent gunshot wounds. Upon arriving at the scene, Eddy County Sheriff's Office Deputies and personnel from the Eddy County Fire and Rescue conducted life saving measures. Native Air responded and transported the subject to the Carlsbad Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

ECSO Detectives responded to the scene and initiated an investigation in cooperation with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI). The subject has been identified as Nicholas Andres Lucero (42) of Carlsbad, NM.

The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation. There are no suspects at large and there is no known threat to the public.

We encourage anyone with relevant information to contact the ECSO Detective Division at 575-887-7551. You may also contact Eddy County Crime Stoppers with the option to remain anonymous.

Today, members of the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office attended and participated in the Carlsbad Police Department’s Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony in honor of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

This year’s memorial carries an even heavier meaning as neighboring communities have recently experienced the tragic loss of a law enforcement officer and members of a Transaero flight crew within the last week.

We stand alongside our fellow first responders, their families, and our surrounding agencies during this difficult time. Please continue to keep all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.

Today, April 2, 2026 is Autism Awareness Day and the month of April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to recognize, support, and celebrate individuals on the autism and neurodivergent spectrum and the families who support them. Currently, it is suspected that globally, 15-20% of all individuals meet a neurodivergent criteria.

At the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, we are committed to fostering understanding, respect, and inclusion in every interaction within our community. We recognize that individuals with autism may experience and respond to the world differently, and even small adjustments in communication and approach can significantly improve safety, trust, and outcomes. Our deputies, as a small gesture of understanding and the willingness to learn, will be wearing a blue ribbon like the one below to show their support.

We are currently working with The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to pursue evidence based training for certifications and expand department-wide training focused on better recognizing and effectively engaging with individuals on the spectrum. This continued education strengthens our ability to serve all members of our community with professionalism and care. By the end of the training, The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office will be recognized as an Organization with Certified Autism Center credentials and we will have a functioning sensory room aiming to improve support, accommodations, and inclusion for people with cognitive differences.

Today — this month—and every month—we encourage awareness, acceptance, and continued learning as we work together to build a safer, more compassionate community for everyone.

Partnering with Community Programs is one of our favorite times!! 🚓 👦🏼👧🏽

And why not during spring break?!

Today, Deputies showed up for the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad and joined in their field day fun.

The kids got to see and get into the armored vehicle, try to pick up the ram, one of the littles tested the siren on the Bearcat- it works 😉, and they got to see and pick up the shields before going to hunt Easter eggs 🐰

Thank you to Michelle Martinez, MJ Chaparro and all the staff at the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad for inviting us to your fun day! I’m not sure who had more fun 🤩

- All children pictured have waivers on file at BGC with permission to post.

We are deeply saddened by the line-of-duty loss of Sergeant Michael Schlattman from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, fellow deputies, and the entire Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office during this incredibly difficult time. Though from another agency, this loss is felt across the entire law enforcement community.

We honor Sergeant Schlattman’s service and sacrifice.

End of Watch: February 23rd, 2026

Rest easy, Sergeant, we got it from here. 💙
