🚨2 Car MVA off embankment with Entrapment 🚨

At approximately 8:58am on 9-10-26
The Smith County Rescue Squad, Smith County EMS, and Forks River Fire Dept was dispatched in the area of Granville Hwy & Austin Ln. Units arrived on scene to find a 2 car MVA with 1 pt still in the vehicle off an embankment and in a creek. One patient was easily accessible with Smith County EMS starting patient care. The vehicle off the embankment and in the creek, rescue members started extricating the pt while other rescue members set up a rope rescue system. Since the car was off an embankment, a rope rescue system had to set up for pt removal. The patient was extricated, and placed in a stokes basket. Then hauled up the embankment with rope and onto the roadway. Smith County EMS continued patient care.
Vanderbilt Life-Flight 1 was set down at Forks River Elementary School for further patient care.

🚨 Vehicle Accident with Entrapment – Lock 7 Road

At approximately 8:48 p.m. Tuesday night, Smith County Rescue, Rock City Fire, Smith County EMS, and law enforcement responded to Lock 7 Road for a single-vehicle accident with entrapment.

Upon arrival, rescue personnel found the vehicle off the roadway and up against several small trees. Rescue personnel utilized the Jaws of Life and cutters to remove the driver’s door and create an opening to access the occupant.

After approximately 20 minutes of extrication efforts, rescue personnel were able to safely remove the driver from the vehicle.

The patient was treated on scene by Smith County EMS before being transported to the Riverview Regional Medical Center helipad, where the patient was transferred by air medical to Nashville for additional care.

We would like to thank all of the agencies involved for their quick response and teamwork at the scene.

Rescue Squad Receives $32,775 Grant

Smith County Rescue Squad is happy to announce that we were the recipient of a $32,775 grant from the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office Rescue Squad Grant Program.

The funds will be used to purchase protective gear for our members, helping ensure that our volunteers have the proper equipment to safely perform their duties while serving our community.

We would also like to thank the Tennessee General Assembly, along with State Representative Michael Hale and State Senator Paul Bailey, for their continued support of local volunteer fire departments and rescue squads.

This grant program has made a tremendous difference for Smith County Rescue Squad. Over the last four years, the program has allowed us to obtain equipment that there is no way we could have afforded in the immediate future without this funding.

We would also like to extend a special thank-you to Rescue Squad member Owen Donnell for submitting this year’s grant application and helping make this award possible.

We are excited to continue expanding our equipment capabilities and keeping our gear upgraded with modern technology through this program. These investments help us better prepare to respond when our community needs us most.

Smith County Rescue Squad sincerely appreciates the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Tennessee General Assembly, Representative Michael Hale, Senator Paul Bailey, and everyone who continues to support Tennessee’s volunteer first responders.

Central, New Middleton & Sykes fire departments responded to a structure fire today in the Sykes District.

Not a good day for firemen as temperature hit near the 100 degree mark.

At approximately 2:23 p.m. today, Smith County Rescue, along with Carthage City Fire, Smith County EMS, and law enforcement, was dispatched to 35 Dixon Springs Highway for a multiple-vehicle MVA.

Upon arrival, responders determined that two patients were pinned inside one vehicle, with three patients sustaining serious injuries.

Smith County Rescue and Carthage City Fire worked together to quickly and safely extricate the trapped patients.

Multiple medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene, and all three seriously injured patients were transported to hospitals in the Nashville area for further treatment.

This is all the information available at this time as the Tennessee Highway Patrol conducts its investigation. We ask everyone to keep the patients, their families, and the responding personnel in their thoughts.

UPDATE 4:15 PM THE ROAD HAS NOW REOPENED

Medical Emergency on Cordell Hull Lake

At approximately 7:54 a.m. this morning, Smith County Rescue Squad was dispatched to the day use area at Cordell Hull Lake for a reported missing boater. Emergency services had been contacted by the man's wife after she became concerned that he had not returned.

After launching a rescue boat, rescue personnel located the subject's boat some distance upstream. As rescuers approached, they discovered the fisherman was still in the boat and was semi-conscious due to an apparent medical emergency.

Rescue personnel boarded the subject's boat and used it to transport him back to the day use area. During the return trip, EMS was notified, and an ambulance was dispatched to the boat ramp.

Upon arrival at the ramp, the patient was transferred from the boat to the awaiting ambulance, where he was treated on the scene before being transported non-emergency to Riverview Regional Medical Center.

We would like to thank all of our volunteer members for their quick response this morning in locating the subject and rapidly getting him back to awaiting EMS personnel so he could receive the medical care.

Tragedy Averted

At approximately 1:15 a.m. this morning, Smith County Rescue Squad, New Middleton Fire Department, Smith County EMS, and law enforcement responded to the 251-mile marker westbound on I-40 for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a 15-passenger van. The original caller reported that occupants were trapped inside the vehicle.

Upon arrival, responders found the van resting on its side. Thankfully, there were no significant injuries, but the occupants did need assistance getting out of the vehicle. Fire and rescue personnel removed the front windshield and opened the rear doors, allowing everyone to be safely extricated.

Three people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining eight occupants, who were gathered in the median of the interstate, were assisted by the Smith County Rescue Squad, the Smith County Sheriff's Department, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol and transported to the Pilot and Wendy's at the Gordonsville exit.

New Middleton Fire personnel and Smith County Rescue Squad members also loaded all of the group's luggage into a volunteer firefighter's pickup truck and ensured it was safely delivered to them at the Pilot.

We are incredibly thankful this incident resulted in no serious injuries, considering the circumstances. We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to all of the volunteers who got out of bed in the early morning hours to respond to this call and assist a group of people in need. Your dedication and willingness to serve make a difference in our community every day.

Also a special thank you to the staff at Wendy's for accommodating the remaimg people until their new mode of transportation arrived to get them.

*Go Give These Men Some Support Saturday Details Below*

The Forks River Fire Department is inviting residents to join them for their annual Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forks River Fire Hall.

This year’s event will be held a little earlier than usual and will feature several new additions for the community to enjoy. Attendees will be treated to a free meal catered by Little Creek BBQ, including hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, and drinks.

Families are encouraged to bring the kids to explore the department’s fire trucks and check out its new brush truck. Firefighters will be on hand to visit with community members and showcase the equipment they use to serve the area. Weather permitting, a bounce house will also be available for children.

The event is the department’s way of thanking the community for its continued support while providing an opportunity for residents to meet the firefighters who proudly serve District II.
