Partners For Parks 🌳 Breathing Life Into Our Community 🌳

Improving life in Mecklenburg Co. and beyond by enhancing parks, greenways, & open spaces.

Partners for Parks is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. In Mecklenburg County, we partner with the Park & Recreation Department which preserves and maintains over 200+ parks and facilities covering almost 20,000 acres of parkland. Partners for Parks strives to sustain the legacy of recreation by providing a safe place to raise funds – offering grant assistance to area organizations. We also facilitate community outreach and education to bolster the trails, the parks, the playgrounds, the recreation centers and the natural areas saved and created. Our goal is Breathing Life Into Our Community and ultimately enhance the gifts of beauty and quality of life for the people in our region. Since its establishment in 1996, Partners for Parks has been an integral advocate for promoting and enhancing parks, greenways, open spaces, active play and recreation. Our Board of Directors oversees community-centric projects from memorial park benches and newly planted trees to new structures that grace the trails and greenways of Mecklenburg County. Each year, we work with the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation staff to host exciting recreational programs and events that bring our citizens together to support community causes. One example is the Hats Off to Parks event that raised funds to build a new playground at Park Road Park to honor those who lost their lives in the Newtown, CT tragedy – the construction / build was completed in October 2014. The beauty you see in the parks and projects throughout the county are the outward expression of our work, the fruits of our labor. You can see those efforts through the smiling faces of children on the Reedy Creek Nature Playground or along the Liz Hair Nature Walk where members of our community enjoy the outdoors via the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. For us, each park and project is a legacy we leave behind for future generations. Each effort is an investment in the natural beauty of our region. Partners for Parks is the pathway to a healthier and more livable and natural future that encourages all residents of our region to experience the joy of parks, nature and recreation.

Partners for Parks joined the community Saturday to celebrate the re-opening of the traffic garden at Clanton Park! 🎉

Traffic gardens feature scaled-down roads, crosswalks, and signs where kids can safely practice walking and biking skills. This one was re-painted this summer with support from Partners for Parks, Mecklenburg County Office of Public Health, and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.

Trips for Kids capped off the celebration with an on-site Learn to Ride program.

Haven’t checked out a traffic garden yet? Mecklenburg County has seven 🚲 Learn more at the link in our bio!

☕🥐 vs. 📱🛌

We know which one wins.

Trade the doomscroll for a park bench. Same coffee, same croissant, way better lighting (thanks, sun!) ☀️

🌳 Big things are happening at Idlewild Road Park! Located right in Matthews, this 203-acre Mecklenburg County gem is the perfect spot for outdoor activities. Whether you’re planning a round of disc golf or looking for a new leisurely spot to stroll, Idlewild has something for everyone.

Here’s what you can find there right now:
🥏 Disc golf: Challenge your friends to a round on the popular 18-hole course.
🥾 Greenway access: Hop directly onto the beautiful Irvins Creek Greenway trail.
🛝 Family fun: Let the kids run wild on the playgrounds and ballfields.
🧺 Picnic shelters: Perfect for birthdays, gatherings, or just relaxing in the shade.

📣 Exciting park news:
Thanks to recent county investments, two new parcels of land totaling 30 acres were purchased to expand the park’s green space! Plus, a brand-new skate park is officially in the works, with construction planned to kick off in late 2026/early 2027.

Evergreen Nature Preserve quietly offers shade on those 98-degree days.

The walking path winds under a canopy thick enough to turn a humid Charlotte afternoon into something just a bit cooler and slower – just what you need during these heat waves.

(Bonus: Benches are tucked along the way for when you want to sit and actually notice the trees instead of just passing through them 😍)

This is one of the many examples of why we advocate for public green space here in Mecklenburg County! Which parks and greenways do you like to visit when it's hot and you need shade?

🛹 Big wheels are turning for skate parks in Mecklenburg County! Park and Rec just shared plans for FIVE new skate parks and renovations to three more making this one of the county's most requested amenities finally get the investment it deserves.

What's coming:
📍 Eastland Park - opening in the spring
📍 Shuffletown Park - construction starts this fall
📍 Nevin Park - in early design phase
📍 Idlewild Road Park - construction targeted late 2026/early 2027
📍 Bryant Park - construction targeted 2027

Most spots will offer 10,000-20,000 sq ft of skateable terrain designed for all skill levels – and the community helped shape these designs through public input. We love to see it! 🙌

🛝 We had a wonderful time yesterday during a community build at Shuffletown Park in northwest Charlotte!

There's a new playground being installed at this 54-acre park off near 485 and N.C. 16 that used to be the site of a drag racing track. Other new amenities coming here over next year or so include a splash pad, skatepark, and a basketball court.

We simply love seeing investment in our local parks like this! YOU can get involved and help contribute, too. Visit partnersforparks.org to learn more.
