August is Black Philanthropy Month—a time to celebrate the generosity, leadership, and collective power of Black philanthropists and communities.

Our friends at New Generation of African American Philanthropists (NGAAP Philanthropic Collective) are bringing Black philanthropy into a global conversation this month with Black Philanthropy Across the Pond, a virtual conversation with the UK-based Black Funding Network about why collective giving matters.

Join NGAAP and Black Funding Network on Thursday, August 20, from 1–2 p.m. EDT to hear from philanthropy and social impact leaders in the U.S. and U.K. about the power of giving together, building community, and creating lasting change.

And don't forget to watch NGAAP's social channels for information about on Friday, August 28—Charlotte's day of giving for Black philanthropy.

🌎 Advance registration for Black Philanthropy Across the Pond is required: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/oKgfCcmsTsiJNYfyZ2hIYg #/registration

This week, we're wrapping up our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner Spotlight with our Health Opportunity Grant Recipient Hearts For The Invisible CLT (HFTICC).

HFTICC serves individuals and families experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. As one of the most economically segregated cities in the US, Charlotte’s lack of affordable housing presents an urgent crisis for many in need. HFTICC exists to address these needs by meeting people where they are through trauma-informed, housing-first outreach programs.

HFTICC’s Street Outreach program is designed to engage with individuals and families experiences unsheltered homelessness through consistent, compassionate contact that builds trust and offers immediate relief. They provide supplies, food and survival gear while working to connect clients with emergency shelters and support transitions to permanent housing.

The WIF Opportunity Grant will allow HFTICC to quickly and nimbly respond to emerging community needs and will support investments into the organizations infrastructure.

We're continuing our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series with our Health Opportunity Grant recipient, McAdams Free Clinic (formerly Matthews Free Medical Clinic).

The mission of McAdams Free Clinic (MFC) is to create a medical home for the uninsured. It provides high-quality, compassionate healthcare, helping ensure that more members of our community have access to the care they need.

One of the things that makes McAdams Free Clinic unique is its comprehensive approach to care, offering both primary and specialty services to help patients manage their health and improve long-term outcomes. It also strives to make healthcare more accessible for patients by offering a night clinic for who cannot attend appointments during the traditional workday.

We're honored to partner with organizations like McAdams Free Clinic that are working every day to improve health outcomes and expand access to care throughout our region.

Next in our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series is our Environment Opportunity Grant recipient, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF).

NCWF protects, conserves, and restores NC’s wildlife and habitats, using innovative approaches to address wildlife declines, habitat loss, and climate change. At their core is fostering meaningful connections between people and nature.

In Mecklenburg County, NCWF’s target population is underserved, low-income communities who are adversely affected by the “heat island,” that is, where the loss of tree canopy has resulted in higher surface and air temperatures. In these areas, the tree canopy can be as much as 50% less than other areas of the county, resulting in unhealthy air quality, higher energy consumption, and more heat-related illnesses for residents, combined with a loss of access to nature and loss of habitat for wildlife.

Support from this year's Opportunity Grant will allow NCWF to expand their advocacy, education and on-the-ground work to ensure that Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are able to keep up with the environmental impacts of a growing population for years to come.

We're continuing our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series with our Education Opportunity Grant recipient, Charlotte Bilingual Learning Center (formerly Charlotte Bilingual Preschool).

Charlotte Bilingual Learning Center (CBLC) exists to improve early education outcomes and promote economic mobility for Latino children and families, populations historically marginalized by language barriers, limited access, and systemic inequities.

North Carolina is experiencing a severe childcare shortage, costing the state $5.65 billion annually, with 35% of parents leaving the workforce due to childcare issues. The Child Opportunity Index identifies zip codes serviced by CBLC with "low" or "very low" early childhood education opportunity levels, "low" or "very low" Social and Economic domain levels, and high populations of Hispanic children ages 0-17.

Because of these barriers, CBLC's greatest challenge is meeting unprecedented demand. Their waitlist exceeds 100 preschool students, and adult program participation has surged, which is a testament to deep community trust, even as other Latino-serving organizations see declining attendance.

With the WIF Opportunity Grant, CBLC will be able to meet this demand and ensure that more children and adults in the Latino community are able to receive accessible, high-quality programming.
