Drunk. Nighttime. Wrong-way. This could have ended much differently.

Friday (10/16/26) around 10:15 p.m., one of our night shift sergeants was on patrol heading north on Highway 41 near Hundertmark Road when he spotted headlights coming straight at him. A vehicle was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of this divided highway. The speed limit in this area is 50 miles per hour.

The sergeant swerved to avoid a head-on crash, turned around, and got the vehicle stopped before it could get much further.

The driver, a 56-year-old woman, gave a preliminary breath sample of .16% BAC - twice the legal limit. She was arrested for suspicion DWI.

We’re grateful for the quick-thinking sergeant and that everyone made it home safely that night. It’s a good reminder of how fast a bad decision behind the wheel could turn into a tragedy for someone else.

For emergencies, always call 911. For non-emergencies, or if you need to talk with an officer about anything else, call Carver County dispatch at 952-361-1231 and ask for a Chaska officer. Police officers are available 24-hours a day, every day of the year.

Our police department lobby is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon). It’s closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Even if our lobby is closed, there’s always a phone available in the open vestibule of the Public Safety Facility that connects you directly to dispatch.

During business hours, you can stop by the lobby to do things like request records, apply for a permit to purchase, pick up found property, complete other forms (which can also be found on our website: https://chaskapolice.gov/178/Police-Forms), or report a crime. Again, even if our lobby is closed, you can always speak to an officer by calling Carver County dispatch.

Yesterday, Officer VanDaalen was recognized by the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety for his DWI enforcement efforts.

Preventing crashes, saving lives, and keeping families safe are top priorities as Chaska Officers patrol the city. Great work Officer VanDaalen!
