"If we all lose our housing, where are we to go?”

Thank you to Reema Saleh and Block Club Chicago for drawing attention to this impending crisis.

Housing with supportive services and without arbitrary time limits doesn't just benefit people like Mildred—it benefits all of us.

The federal government plans to move away from funding Permanent Supportive Housing programs, which provide apartments and wraparound social services. It could leave over 3,000 Chicagoans at risk of falling back into homelessness.

Hope for Homes Day is just a few days away! Here's Board Member Barbara Jacobs on an experience that reminded her of why the work of Deborah's Place is so important:

"My friend Katie and I were waiting on South Halsted street to get our cars after dinner.
A polite woman dragging a suitcase behind her stopped and asked: "May I bother you nice women?"
We listened as she asked for a few dollars - she was homeless.
"Where do you stay?"
Her: "On couches. With friends. Sometimes in shelters."
Us: "Have you applied to Salvation Army?"
Her: "They take too long. I don't have an address for them to get me."
Did you know that women account for 33 to 38% of the homeless population?
Which is why we asking this July for a $38.33 donation to Deborah's Place/Hope for Homes campaign, supported by the City and the State.

Hope for Homes Day is next week! Here's why one of our supporters is fundraising for Deborah's Place on July 16th:

"My daughter met a friend at camp. They became close quickly, and her friend often came home with us after camp or met up with my daughter on weekends.

Sometimes we picked her up from a nearby fast-food restaurant. Other times, we met at the mall and walked through it until we found her. At the end of the day, we would drop her off near the street corner by her temporary housing, where she lived with her mother and other families in “hidden” housing.

By the end of that summer, they moved into an apartment nearby. I don’t think I realized until then that I had been holding my breath since learning they didn’t have permanent housing. The relief I felt was immense, and I can only imagine what that moment meant for them.

My Hope for Homes is that every person in our great state of Illinois has access to the safety, dignity, and stability of a place to call home."
