Happy New Year! We're feeling immensely proud of everything our residents achieved in 2023—none of which would have been possible without the support of you, our neighbors and supporters.
Deborah's Place has been doing this since 1985, and in that time we've seen lots of changes. But year after year, our fundamental beliefs, our mission, and our unwavering commitment remain the same. Our resolutions are: to help our residents pursue their goals, to serve even more women, and to keep fighting for a world where no person is homeless.
May 2024 be a year in which we all treat each person we meet as our neighbor.

12/31/2023

We know there's a lot going on as the year comes to a close. So we invite you to pause your scrolling, close your eyes, and just listen for a moment.

In 2023, hundreds of women entered or maintained permanent housing at Deborah's Place. This audio contains just a few of their stories.

There are hundreds of other women still unsheltered in Chicago: women with their own stories to tell, and chapters they've yet to write.

Will you help them get the support they need to open that next chapter?

There's still time for you to make a 2023 tax-deductible donation with life-changing impact. Give here to support the next chapter: https://www.deborahsplace.org/ella

Another big event this past year: Opening Doors 2023! A hundred dedicated supporters of Deborah's Place joined us at the Garfield Park Conservatory and together we raised $107,475 to support our ongoing work for women experiencing homelessness. Three brave participants from our programs shared their stories and touched our hearts, reminding us all of why this work is so important.

See more photos from the event at the link below, and keep an eye out for information about Opening Doors 2024 coming soon!

How fitting that the day we recognize Homeless Persons Memorial Day is the Winter Solstice: the day on which those of us in the Northern Hemisphere see the most hours of darkness and the fewest of daylight.

We know that access to safe, clean, affordable housing saves lives and repairs communities. It's why we do everything that we do.

Take a stroll down memory lane with us, and let's take a look at some of the big events for Deborah's Place in the past year!
2023 started with big changes, as CEO Audrey Thomas retired after 37 years at Deborah's Place. Fortunately, we knew we were in good hands as her "work wife" Kathy Booton Wilson stepped in to lead! Audrey's focus on community-building and empathetic leadership shaped us into the organization we are today, and her legacy continues here through the lives she changed and the way she helped us grow.
There's still time to make a year-end contribution to help us continue to grow and change lives! Click here to donate and make a difference: https://www.deborahsplace.org/ella/

In a world full of noise, it matters what you say.
If you're a supporter of Deborah's Place, we know you believe that housing is a human right.
As the year comes to an end, we invite you to shout that value loud and clear by donating to support our work and our mission: that every woman has a safe, supportive home.

Yes, it's true: we've joined the 21st century and gotten on Venmo. It's so easy to send a few bucks to make a difference in the lives of women healing from homelessness!
Help us celebrate by sliding a couple bucks to us on Venmo? Think of it like paying your friend back for coffee—except in this case, "coffee" is permanent supportive housing with case management and a community of people there to support a woman's healing journey.
Oh, and unlike your oat milk latte, it's tax-deductible ☺️

Deborah's Place exists because we believe in the resilience of women: their ability to face devastating circumstances, survive, and heal. Every day, we see women lift each other up to rise out of the trauma of homelessness and pursue their goals.
We also believe that housing is a human right, and that no person should have to suffer the way that thousands of our neighbors do today.
We serve over 600 women a year on their journeys from homelessness to healing, but we know we need to do more. Will you help us?

Support and housing through Deborah's Place make it possible for women like Ella to achieve stability and pursue their goals after homelessness.

You and I both know that there is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing another person, in our own likeness, sleeping on a sidewalk, a park bench, or in a public park in a tent. Together, you and I can put an end to the inhumane conditions that have allowed us to be desensitized to the plight of an unhoused person. Nothing is more heartwarming than assisting another person in need. For almost forty years, you and I have provided clean, safe, and affordable housing for women who are homeless. Let's keep our good energy and synergy moving forward, make your gift today. www.deborahsplace.org

With the change of the seasons, the experience of unsheltered homelessness becomes even harder and more dangerous.
For housed folks, observing the crisis of homelessness becomes even more distressing—and it's easy to feel helpless to do anything that makes a difference.
Please: do not to turn away. Your neighbors need you. Instead, turn your empathy into action!
There are so many ways that YOU can make a difference for people experiencing homelessness by supporting Deborah's Place and other direct service agencies.
💰 Donate money - Even the smallest contributions make a huge difference in not just continuing our work, but expanding it to serve more women.
🤝 Volunteer - Whether serving a meal, leading a class or event, or helping to sort donations, volunteers help GET THINGS DONE around here.
📣 Advocate - We need the whole community's help to ! Check out our friends for more information on how you can help us create a dedicated funding stream for permanent housing in our city.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...
TOMORROW, November 28th, is ! A day for turning goodwill and holiday spirit into life-changing gifts for our communities.
This year, we're asking you to put your money where your heart is and support Deborah's Place, so we can open more doors of opportunity for more women in 2024.

When you give to Deborah's Place this , you give . Here are just a few of the things that means to us:
🏡 Permanent Supportive Housing: Not shelter for a night, but a home for life. Because of the generosity of supporters like you, once a woman comes to Deborah's Place, she never needs to be homeless again.
🕯️ Personalized Case Management: Each woman at Deborah's Place has a case manager in her corner, reminding her of her strengths, directing her to resources, and helping her to achieve her goals on her terms.
🩺 Health Services: Connecting women with preventative care and treatment that were inaccessible when they were experiencing homelessness.

Home: a place of memories, a place of safety, and a human right.
Board President Jeremy Bressman says that "Home is a place where we spend time with our families & friends, a place where we experience life events and make memories. But a home is also the physical space where we eat, work, sleep and unwind. I believe having a home is a basic human right and that everyone should have a home, regardless of their situation."
This , your support of Deborah's Place helps us give to women without this basic human right. Make your holiday contribution here: https://www.deborahsplace.org/donate-2/giving-tuesday-2023/

For Kathy (CEO of our organization), home is defined by a sense of belonging and a lack of worry—and by the loved ones in the space with her, including her 8 rescued cats.
"For me, home is a place where I belong, and where I can feel safe and be who I am among my family members and 8 felines, (all formerly homeless), with whom I share my abode. I don’t need to worry about when I will eat or whether someone will harm me while I sleep. I can cuddle with a kitty and be who I am: not perfect, but good enough. Here I belong."
Share with us what means to YOU, and make a gift with life-changing impact this . Even the smallest gift helps us open doors of opportunity for women experiencing homelessness—so they can spend the rest of their lives with the feeling of belonging and home that everyone deserves. https://www.deborahsplace.org/donate-2/giving-tuesday-2023/

Continuing our week of Thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who makes it a priority to volunteer their time this holiday season. Recently, employees from Sammons Financial took the time to host a luncheon and bingo game for the women who live in the Rebecca Johnson Apartments. You can see from the smiles all around how rewarding it is to engage in community like this!
Our volunteers mean the world to us; and for those whose empathy requires ACTION for women experiencing homelessness, it's an incredible way to make an impact in your community.

As we prepare to celebrate and spend time with our loved ones, we're especially grateful for the people whose dedication and heart make it possible to open doors of opportunity for women experiencing homelessness. Each year we have a staff "Taste of Home" potluck, with everyone bringing a dish to contribute. It's a delicious and joyful celebration of our workplace family, and the community that we've created here in pursuit of our common mission.

What does "home" mean to you? And what would it mean to be without one?
Deborah's Place Development Director Christy says:
"I love my home because it's a familiar space. I appreciate having everything I enjoy in my home in a place I can safely leave and return to enjoy them again. It’s easy to take that for granted, until I remember how many people don’t have that security."
, a time to turn our gratitude into generosity, is November 28th. Your generous support of Deborah's Place makes it possible for us to provide to hundreds of women in Chicago. Click here to make your life-changing contribution: https://www.deborahsplace.org/donate-2/giving-tuesday-2023/
