The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence celebrated the passage of Karina’s Bill (HB4144), which passed the Illinois House of Representatives yesterday in a bipartisan 80 to 33 vote after passing the Illinois Senate last night. The legislation, which would strengthen and clarify the law regarding the firearm remedy in domestic violence orders of protection, now goes to Gov. JB Pritzker for his signature before becoming law.

Amanda Pyron, President and CEO of The Network, released the following statement:

“Karina's Bill is a critical step forward in protecting survivors of domestic violence from fi****ms. Survivors, judges, and law enforcement will now have clearer, stronger options to remove fi****ms from highly dangerous situations. Survivors seeking to leave violent relationships need to know that when they go to the courts for protection, that protection will work — especially when fi****ms are involved. Karina's Bill moves our state closer to that goal.

On behalf of The Network, thank you to the many domestic violence advocates, legal aid organizations, gun violence prevention groups, medical professionals, and more who advocated for this bill.”

Our last piece of advice in our “How to Support Survivors this Holiday Season” guide focuses on self-care and boundaries.

We can all struggle to prioritize self-care and uphold boundaries. However, for survivors experiencing abuse, this can be particularly difficult to do.

Make sure to encourage self-care and respect the boundaries of survivors this holiday season. This will allow survivors to feel supported and understood.
