As we kick off , we are honored to highlight just a few of the many dedicated Latino men and women who support and advance the mission of the Red Cross across the region.

Today, we celebrate Rodrigo Carrillo, Regional Disaster Officer for the Illinois Red Cross.

“I’m a proud Mexicano and love the passion, vibrancy, and strong family community I’ve known my entire life. Every memory has always involved family and even today, there is always a reason to come together to celebrate and support each other. This sense of community spills over into my work and inspires me to serve those impacted by disasters. And, in serving, I honor my family, especially my grandfather, Jesus Gonzalez, who have inspired, supported and cheered me as I’ve progressed through my career.”

Join us to answer the call when your neighbors need help. Put on a red vest and volunteer with us on a Disaster Action Team. RedCross.org/Volunteer

Volunteer of the Week: Jean-Marie Ebonyi of Decatur

Jean-Marie is a Blood Donor Ambassador who is originally from Nigeria. After moving to Illinois to continue his education, he began looking for ways to get involved and help those in need of lifesaving blood products.

As a physician in his home country, Jean-Marie witnessed firsthand the impact of blood donations and what can happen when blood products aren't available to those in need.

"I know how important blood donations are when people are sick or in accidents," Jean-Marie said. "Unfortunately, I've seen people not receive the treatments they've needed because the blood wasn't there. I just wanted to get involved to help people when I can."

Thank you to Jean-Marie and the many other Blood Donor Ambassadors that are to greet the dedicated Red Cross blood donors at blood drives throughout our region!

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to support kids, teens and young adults battling cancer, as well as others in need of transfusions.

Isabel ‘Isa’ Lopez was a vibrant young lady fascinated with dancing, singing, Broadway plays, and all things Disney. In 2015, just as she had celebrated her 15th birthday, Isa was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic Lymphoma which she courageously fought for two and a half years.

“Until it happens to you, you don’t realize how critical it is to have a steady supply of all blood types,” shared Robert, Isa’s father.

Help ensure a steady blood supply for patients in need. Make an appointment to donate by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

As wildfires continue to ravage the West, Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground, providing critical support to those impacted by fires in California, Nevada, Oregon, and beyond. Shelters are open, offering a safe place to stay for those forced to evacuate.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we stand with our Red Cross colleagues in their efforts to help communities recover.

Need to evacuate ?
• Know where you will go, how you will get there and where you will stay.
• Plan well in advance if you’ll need help leaving or use public transportation.
• If you have a car, ensure the gas tank is full and park it facing the direction of your evacuation route.
• Keep your pets in one room, so you can find them if you need to evacuate quickly.

It’s been 60 years since Claudia Blackman first volunteered with the American Red Cross, when the then-college student first spent time as a Water Safety and Lifeguard Instructor.

Over her six decades with the Red Cross, Claudia has spent time teaching Swimming and Lifeguarding Classes, First Aid and CPR Courses and a multitude of Preparedness and Disaster Response Classes.

She has also fulfilled various disaster and finance related roles within the organization including Disaster Response, Disaster Assessment, Financial Statistical Information and more.

“I think because I’ve volunteered in so many different positions, I can see how in each place, a person’s life has changed,” Claudia said. “A person’s life is helped. A person can move forward because we are there.”

Volunteer of the Week: Dr. Jarmese Sherrod of Chicago
Highly motivated. Inspiring. Giving. Selfless. The list of adjectives can go on and on, but the quality that you quickly grab onto when you speak with Dr. Sherrod is dedicated – in particular, dedicated to youth development.

"I was searching for a way to make an impact on a more global scale and the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Youth Action Campaign program not only allows me to raise awareness of how war impacts students in other parts of the world, how they’re pulled away from their families, or how they’re maybe taking care of themselves and other family – we need to be aware of all of this and help be a solution. And it starts with finding a connection with a humanitarian mission much like I have at the Red Cross,” shared Dr. Sherrod.

Read Dr. Sherrod's story here: https://rdcrss.org/3WJ4u1I

💗 Thank you, Dr. Sherrod! We are proud to count on you and look forward to your continued impact through the IHL Youth Action Campaign and beyond. 💗

As an IHL Youth Action Campaign coordinator, Dr. Sherrod works with a team of young leaders on international humanitarian law principles and other topics. After their training, youth become IHL Advocates and carry out campaigns through in-person and social media activities to raise awareness about the rules of war.

If you’re interested in promoting IHL in your community by participating in the IHL Youth Action Campaign program, click here: https://rdcrss.org/3hwvrB8

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease is the most common genetic blood disorder in the U.S., and regular blood transfusions are critical to manage extreme pain and life-threatening complications.

Angelica’s son, McKinley, was diagnosed with sickle cell at six weeks old. Angelica recounts what their life has been managing sickle cell disease and the complications this presents.

“My son has been in and out of the hospital his entire life to manage his pain and has received so many blood transfusions that I've lost count. There were times when treatments became more intense because sickle cell started impacting his organs. I’ve stood next to my son, wishing with all my might to take on his pain and at a loss as to how to help. Establishing blood drives, inviting our community to be blood donors and sharing how sickle cell impacts our loved ones, that’s how I can best help my son and so many others like him.”

Read Angelica's and McKinley's story here: https://rdcrss.org/4fWRRHW

To commemorate Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we invite you to schedule a time to donate blood. The blood that runs through our veins can ease the suffering of others — and patients battling sickle cell disease need your help now. Visit RedCrossBlood.org, use the Blood Donor App or call 1-800-RED CROSS.

This Labor Day, the Red Cross wants to remind you to keep safety top of mind.

🌭 Never grill indoors — not in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
🐕 Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
🏊 Prevent unsupervised access to water. Fence pools and spas with adequate barriers and keep a constant eye for any water dangers such as portable splash pools/slides, buckets and bathtubs.
🧒 Adults should actively supervise children and stay within arm’s reach of young children and new swimmers. Kids should follow the rules.
👀 Designate a “water watcher” to keep a close eye and constant attention on children and weaker swimmers in and around the water until the next water watcher takes over.

Download the free Red Cross First Aid App and find more safety tips at RedCross.org.

Volunteer of the Week: Joel Koenig of Hoffman Estates

This week we highlight Joel who is nearing his first year volunteering with the Greater Chicago Chapter of the Red Cross. We are grateful for volunteers like Joel who work full-time and dedicate their free time to answering the call for help.

“There are so many ways to volunteer with the Red Cross and it’s work that motivates you to do more especially when you see first-hand how fragile a disaster can make a community, family or individual. I always say, ‘I may not have singing or dancing skills, but I’m very capable and willing to pass out blankets, water, and toys to children, and listen to someone who just lost it all in a disaster like a home fire.’”

Thank you, Joel, for your compassion as you carry out the mission of the Red Cross and for your advice, “I share with volunteers who are just starting: Our Red Cross vests have two pockets, make sure you put a notepad in one pocket and a pack of tissues in the other, you’re going to need both.”

We have a vest, notepad, and a packet of tissues ready waiting for you. Volunteer with us. RedCross.org/Volunteer
