LPCS needs your help to serve the record numbers of Chicagoans experiencing homelessness. https://www.lpcschicago.org/donate

Our CEO, Cheryl Hamilton-Hill, spoke to Fox Business yesterday about the new HUD 2023 annual Homeless Assessment Report. This national report, a snapshot of the unhoused population, shows that on a single night in January 2023 there were more than 650,000 unhoused people in America—a 12 percent increase over 2022 and the highest number ever recorded. “There are quite a few more people over the age of 55 that are experiencing homelessness," said Cheryl, "all the way up into their 80s.”

Here in Chicago, the statistics are dire. According to the same report, the unhoused population increased 58.4% from 2022 to 2023, including a significant increase in homeless veterans. LPCS served a record 3,343 in all our programs in 2023 and the need is only growing.

LPCS needs your help to continue providing a full range of services to the largest number of unhoused individuals. Your gift provides showers, meals, care kits, case management and housing to Chicagoans in need.

The need has never been greater. Please go to https://www.lpcschicago.org/donate to make your year-end gift today.

Last week, Krystal Casey and rang the bell after 118 days with us, and we couldn’t be proud. The progress Krystal has made has been inspiring to us all. One of the best sources of evidence are the glowing reviews we received from her employer. Our own reviews would be equally glowing because Krystal has been an invaluable member of the 600 community at LPCS. Congratulations, Krystal, and best of luck on your own!

Kerry DeBerry has rung the bell! While this is a hard-won congratulations, saying goodbye is not easy. Kerry possesses a heart of pure gold, and we’re lucky and grateful that he shared all that love with of us. We’ll miss the kung-fu movie nights, being serenaded with Jimi Hendrix covers on his beat-up guitar, and his nuggets of wisdom. Congratulations, Kerry! You earned this and then some 🎉

We’ve got another graduate, and this time, it’s international.

Over the course of 97 days, Alex has done tremendous work to secure himself stable housing. It has been an immense pleasure to have worked alongside Alex to set him on his own path for success. We got to see Alex off as he arrived at the airport, ready to embark on his journey back home.

We have been so lucky that Alex has graced us with his culture, kindness, and knowledge. We are all better for knowing him and we know his future will be all the better. Good luck, Alex! 🎉

Once more, with feeling!

Yesterday, Clyde rang the bell. If there is anything Clyde has demonstrated over the past 16 weeks, it’s that he’s full of surprises. Whether it was escorting guests with disabilities to their appointments, or cleaning the entire kitchen by himself, Clyde’s massive heart has been at the center of his stay with LPCS. We’ll all miss him – and his humor – very much.

Double graduation yesterday at 1521!!! 🎉

Two of our lovely Guests are moving to permanent homes. Nikki Campbell and Carolyn Pigram rang the bell after doing the hard work to become independent graduates of LPCS. We are so proud and our Graduate Council, which provides a package of home necessities at graduations, welcomes them with open arms.

Today we achieved something special: a DOUBLE graduation 🎉 Sisters Francine and Lacey are moving back to their hometown in Havre, Montana. Even though they were only here a short time, they made a big impression. Whether helping guests get tidy, pitching in to cook dinner, or advocating for others, the maternal charm of these two ladies was a welcome addition to our home. Of course, this wouldn't be possible without our team. Congratulations and best of luck!

Kason has graduated! 78 days ago, Kason came to LPCS, hit the ground running, and hasn’t stopped since. Getting a job in his first few days, working overtime to save extra money, and helping staff keep the shelter clean (after he had spent all day cleaning the streets of Chicago) are testaments to Kason’s sheer determination. While we’ll miss his early morning coffee chats that started our days off on the right path, we’re tremendously proud that Kason is now on a path all his own. Congratulations, Kason, and best of luck!
