⚡ Quite a few homes are without power at the moment, and judging by the sound around town, the generators have officially clocked in for their shift.

While we all hope this outage is a short one, here are a few important reminders to keep everyone safe until the lights come back on:

🔌 Generators belong OUTSIDE. Always.
Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows and vents. Garages, even with the door open, are not safe places to run one.

💨 Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” for a reason.
Make sure you have working CO alarms in your home, especially when using a generator or other fuel-burning equipment.

⚡ Don’t backfeed your home.
Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. It can send electricity back onto power lines and create a serious hazard for utility crews working to restore power.

⛽ Let it cool before you refuel.
Gasoline and hot generator parts are not a combination we want meeting each other.

🕯️ Skip the candles if you can.
Flashlights and battery-powered lights are a much safer choice. Your house does not need to become a historical reenactment just because the power is out.

🚪 Check on your neighbors.
Especially older adults, anyone who relies on electrically powered medical equipment, and those who may need a little extra help during an outage.

Hopefully, by the time you finish reading this, the power is already coming back on. Until then, stay safe, Collierville.

🎥🔥 Collierville high school students, this one’s for you!

Are you into video production, social media, graphic design or creating content? Put those skills to work and help us spread an important fire safety message!
The Collierville Fire & Rescue Fire Prevention Week Digital Media/PSA Contest is back! Students can work individually or in teams of up to four to create a short, 30-second PSA based on this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Safe Charging is Your Superpower.”
The contest is open to public, private and homeschool students in grades 9–12 who live in Collierville.

🏆 And there’s something new this year! In addition to our local contest, students will also have the opportunity to compete, win and be recognized at the state level!

Last year, our students showed us just how creative they can be, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with this year.

📅 Local entries are due September 18.

Think driving a fire engine is just about lights, sirens and knowing how to handle a really big fire engine?🚒

There’s a little more to it than that. And by “a little,” we mean… hope you remember your math.

You’ve seen us celebrate firefighters who have been promoted to the rank of Driver, but this week, some of our next generation of up-and-coming Drivers are learning exactly what it takes to earn that seat during Pumper Driver/Operator training.

Getting the engine safely to the scene is only part of the job. Once they arrive, the Driver/Operator has an entirely different responsibility: getting water to the firefighters who need it.

That means knowing how to calculate pump discharge pressure, friction loss through different sizes and lengths of hose, nozzle pressure, elevation changes and flow requirements. Change the hose length, nozzle, elevation or water supply, and the numbers change too.

Then they have to turn those calculations into real-world results at the pump panel.

They’re also practicing hydrant and water supply operations, drafting, relay pumping, apparatus placement, inspections, troubleshooting and the many other skills that come with operating a fire engine.
It’s part math, part mechanics, part problem-solving and a whole lot of responsibility.

Because the firefighters on the other end of that hoseline are depending on their Driver to get it right.

So the next time you see us congratulate someone on being promoted to Driver, you’ll know earning that seat involves a whole lot more than knowing how to drive the engine.

For now, our future Drivers are putting in the work, doing the math and getting ready for the day it’s their turn to take the wheel.

Saturday’s storms left trees down, and many of our neighbors without power, but as the skies cleared, our firefighters were glad to spend the opening Collierville Dragons football game with the community we are proud to serve.

Yesterday, Tennessee also said goodbye to someone who spent a lifetime reminding us about kindness, resilience and taking care of one another.

A fitting reminder after a stormy Saturday, and one worth carrying with us long after the skies clear.

⚠️ POWER OUTAGE

CPD is aware of a widespread power outage affecting the eastern portion of Collierville. At this time, we do not know the cause, but MLGW has been notified.

If your power is out, please report the outage to MLGW at (901) 544-6500.

🚦 If you come to a traffic signal that is completely out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Please slow down, use caution, and make sure it is safe before proceeding.

If you see a downed power line or another emergency involving electrical lines, please stay away from the area and call CPD Dispatch at (901) 853-3207. For an immediate emergency, call 911.

We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Traffic Update - Crews have completed work and all roadways are open again.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT 🚨

MLGW crews are continuing repairs to multiple power lines and utility poles in the Shelby Drive area. To allow crews to safely complete this work, the following road closures are in effect:

Shelby Drive is closed to eastbound and westbound through traffic from Planters Trace Lane to Reynolds Road. Access will be limited to residents within the affected area.

Reynolds Road is also closed to northbound and southbound through traffic in the area. Access will be limited to residents within this area.

The estimated time of completion for this work is 2:00 pm.

Please avoid the area, use an alternate route, and use caution around utility crews and emergency personnel working along the roadway.

We appreciate your patience and will provide updates when they become available.

STORM UPDATE

Here is an update on some of the issues from last night’s storms:

Shelby Drive, from Reynolds Road to Planters Trace Lane, remains blocked due to a tree down on power lines.

Fleming Drive, south of Shelby Drive, is also blocked due to trees down.

Collierville - Arlington, between Poplar and Fletcher is also closed due to trees on power lines.

Peterson Lake at Cottonwood is also closed.

Town crews are working to clear the trees and get these roads reopened.

🚦Most traffic signals are back up and operational. As a reminder, if you come to an intersection where the traffic signal is completely out, treat the intersection as a 4-way stop.

CPD has also spoken with MLGW. They are working to restore power as quickly as possible and have called in additional crews to help.

If your power is out, please report the outage directly to MLGW at 901-544-6500 rather than calling CPD Dispatch.

If there is an emergency involving a downed power line or another immediate hazard, you may call CPD Dispatch at (901) 853-3207 or 911.

Please use caution this morning and give crews plenty of room to work.

⚠️ STORM & TRAFFIC UPDATE ⚠️

The Collierville Police Department is aware of multiple locations without power and is responding to numerous calls involving storm debris, downed trees, and power lines. Additional CPD resources have been activated to assist with storm-related calls and traffic issues throughout the community. At this time, there are no reported injuries related to the recent storm.

Please avoid the following areas due to power lines in the roadway, which have made them impassable until crews can safely clear them:

Collierville-Arlington Road between Fletcher Road and Poplar Avenue
Peterson Lake Road at Harpers Ferry Road
Shelby Drive west of Houston Levee Road
Fleming Road north of Holmes Road

🚦 Please treat all intersections without power as four-way stops. Slow down, use caution, and remain alert for emergency personnel and utility crews working in the area.

Town of Collierville crews and MLGW crews have been notified and are actively working to address these locations. Due to the extent of the recent storm damage across the Mid-South, there is currently no estimated time for when these areas will be cleared or power restored.

If you encounter additional storm-related hazards or affected roadways not listed above, please contact CPD's non-emergency number at 901-853-3207.

To report a power outage, please contact MLGW's 24-hour Outage Hotline at (901) 544-6500.

Please avoid impacted areas when possible and allow emergency and utility crews room to work safely. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Fire Chief John Selberg has made the decision to retire and has resigned from his position effective immediately.

We understand there have been questions raised in the community about his employment status, but it is not customary or appropriate in either the public or private sector to discuss details related to personnel matters.

Chief Selberg has served the Town of Collierville honorably. We are grateful for his dedicated service and wish him well.

The Collierville Fire Department will continue to operate seamlessly under the direction of Acting Chief Mark Carter.

🔥 It’s that time of year again! 🎨🚒

Collierville Fire & Rescue is excited to announce our Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest!
This year’s NFPA Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Students are encouraged to get creative while helping teach our community about lithium-ion battery safety, including buying, charging, and recycling batteries safely.

🎨 A few quick rules:
Open to K–12 students in Collierville, including public, private, and homeschool students

Posters should focus on the 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme and safety messages

-Artwork must be handmade and no larger than 11" x 17"
-Winners will be selected by grade, with an Accessible Arts Division also available
-📅 Posters are due no later than 4:00 PM on Monday, September 21.
