What happens when you give our principals and Cabinet members bread, sandwich supplies and a challenge?

450 sandwiches. And, naturally, a little friendly competition.

Our GMSD leaders took a few minutes at the end of the day to roll up their sleeves and assemble sandwiches for a local soup kitchen. Teams divided up the work, found their rhythm and, because this is GMSD, quickly figured out how to make it a competition.

But the real win? Giving back to our community.

It’s in action: modeling the behaviors we want our students and staff to see, finding ways to serve others and having a little fun while we’re at it.

👑 Meet your 2026 Houston High Homecoming Queen JD Zatar!

You saw the crown. Now, get to know the Mustang wearing it.

JD is a Houston High senior, a youth professional ballet dancer who has been dancing for 14 years and a student leader with a serious heart for service. She logged more than 90 volunteer hours last year and serves in organizations including HOSA, SGA, Horizons, Key Club and the GMSD Student Ambassadors.

But one of our favorite things about JD? Her passion for making the arts more inclusive. She teaches with Ballet Memphis’ Inclusive Dance Program and brought that idea back to Houston High, where she founded an Inclusive Dance Program for students with disabilities and special needs.

She’s also the executive director of Brain2Heart, helping younger students explore medicine through hands on learning, and somehow finds time for a pretty impressive academic schedule, too- eight AP courses and 10 honors courses so far.

Congratulations to our new Homecoming Queen, JD Zatar! 👑

🎭 When students take the director’s chair, they take ownership of the entire production! Houston High School’s Student One Acts returned to the stage with six productions, each led by a student director.

From casting and rehearsals to costumes, lighting, props and stage management, students took the lead in nearly every part of bringing their shows to life. Each production reflected the unique creative vision of its student director.

This year’s directors included Betsy Rivas, Toby Gescheit, Evelyn Dluhos, Veronica Velychko, Brant Loper and Nora O’Connell. Their leadership gave students the opportunity to build confidence, solve problems and discover what they can accomplish when given the freedom to lead.

We’re proud to see our students step up, take ownership and shine both onstage and behind the scenes! 🎭

Fifth grade scientists in Mrs. Stidham’s and Ms. Schlesser’s classes are putting animal adaptations to the test!

Students used everyday objects like tweezers, chopsticks, pipettes and slotted spoons as “bird beaks” to see which tools worked best for gathering different types of food. Through this hands-on investigation, they discovered how physical adaptations help animals meet their needs and survive in their environments.

From Houston High to the Memphis Tigers! Emersyn Sells, a Houston High alumna, is bringing her cheerleading talents back home as a Memphis Tigers cheerleader. 🏈📣

After spending her freshman year at West Georgia, Emersyn transferred to Memphis, returning to the community she grew up in. She began cheering at age 6 and won a national championship with Houston High in 2022.

Now, she gets to experience Memphis football from the sidelines, creating a full-circle moment as she cheers on the team her father once played for.

🎶 GMSD students are bringing their talents beyond the classroom and into the community!

Houston High School students Brant Loper, Myles Martin, Spencer Malahy and Betsy Rivas recently performed during networking hour at a Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, giving local business and community leaders the chance to enjoy live music while connecting with one another.

Through this partnership, student musicians are gaining valuable experience performing in professional settings, building confidence and connecting with their community.

We’re proud to see our students share their talents and make music a part of the GMSD experience!🎶
