Today, we remember the life and legacy of Gloria Steinem, the Ohio-born journalist, organizer, and trailblazing advocate for women’s equality, who has died at the age of 92.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem became one of the most influential voices of the modern women’s movement. For more than five decades, she worked to expand opportunities for women and ensure that women’s voices were heard — in their communities, in public life, and at the ballot box.
Her work helped bring national attention to issues of equality, representation, and women’s political participation. She co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus and spent decades encouraging women not only to vote, but also to organize, lead, and seek public office.
The League of Women Voters was founded more than a century ago from the movement for women’s suffrage, and we continue to believe in the power of every person to make their voice heard through our democracy.
As we remember Gloria Steinem, we honor a lifetime devoted to expanding whose voices are heard and whose experiences are represented.
May her legacy continue to remind us of the power of participation, advocacy, and using our voices.
