Tell ODOT to Save Poston Preserve! Currently, the preferred alternative highway connector route between US-23 and I-71 would bisect the preserve. This route would fragment and permanently alter an ecological complex containing mature and old growth forest, numerous Category 3 wetlands, more than 1,000 documented species of plants and animals including federally listed bat species.

Poston Preserve was just purchased by our friends at Appalachia Ohio Alliance in 2023, and since then has been expanded to protect over 400 acres, including 6,000 linear feet of the upper reaches of Alum Creek. In just 3 years volunteers have contributed thousands of hours to remove invasive species and plant over 300,000 trees on the property. Millions of dollars of private and taxpayer dollars have been spent to protect and improve this important preserve, that is now under consideration by ODNR to be designated a State Nature Preserve. It’s happening! Fall migration accompanied by a shift to some cool sunny weather 😍

BIRD MIGRATION! The first bird surge of the season has brought much higher than expected bird activity Monday night. An estimated 232,000,000 birds are on the move, tracked by Doppler Radar moving South/Soutwest at 18 mph around an altitude of 2,100 feet. This data is according to BirdCast shows the highest concentration from the Great Lakes heading south across the Mississippi River Valley!

A new story is taking flight on the Sawmill Wetlands Story Trail. Beginning August 8, visitors can follow Shimmer, a tree swallow, through A Place Called Home – Shimmer’s Journey, a new kid-friendly story that highlights the remarkable migration of tree swallows.

Families can explore Shimmer’s adventure along the self-guided trail and learn how tree swallows choose nest sites, raise their young, and prepare for their long seasonal flights. The trail is free, open daily from dawn to dusk at 2650 Sawmill Place Boulevard, and will feature Shimmer’s story beginning August 8 and continuing through October.

Oodles of Odes: Dragonfly Walk

Where: Scioto Audubon Metro Park, meet at the entrance to the Grange Insurance Audubon Center

Join Deb Marsh to discover the world of Odonata, better known as dragonflies and damselflies. We will explore various ponds on the Metro Park property. Find out about the oddly fascinating life cycle of these insects, learn to identify a few of the common ones, and hear about the exciting citizen science effort here in Ohio that is documenting Odonata observations throughout the state. Bring water, a hat, and binoculars if you have them.

Deb is a longtime birder, butterflyer, and dragonfly enthusiast—she is interested in just about anything that happens to be along the trail. One of her favorite things is to introduce others to the fascinating world of natural history.
