Lloyd Sandefer, president of the Conroe Professional Firefighters Association, said he has never seen the city freeze its step pay for cost savings but said he was thankful for the council decision to reinstate the program.
"We are grateful that Gary Scott, Nancy Mikeska, Fire Chief Paul Sims, and Director of Human Resources Andre Houswer have always taken our meetings and helped us work through this issue," Sandefer said in a statement. "We understand that it is hard times for the City, but it’s also hard times for the employees, who are the backbone of the city. TSAFF today urged the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to support unprecedented new research on firefighter cancer survivorship. From TSAFF President John Riddle's letter: "While progress has been made in understanding cancer incidence within the fire service, there remains a significant and glaring gap in knowledge regarding survivorship experience after cancer diagnosis. Importantly, this will be the first study of its kind study conducted in Texas to comprehensively assess survivorship among firefighters."

The Conroe Firefighters would like to sincerely thank each Candidate that is running in the May 2026 election, for coming out Monday evening and participating in the Public Safety Forum that was co-hosted by the Conroe Professional Fire Fighters Association, and Conroe Police Officers Association.

The event was very informative and respectful. It was great to meet each candidate and hear their stories. We wish each candidate the best of luck in their run for office.
