New Visions Homeless Services

New Visions Homeless Services New Visions services are related to addressing basic needs and helping to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness in our community.

New Visions Homeless Services, was founded in 1995 in Council Bluffs by Reverend Harry and Ginny Wallar with a mission of feeding the homeless and hungry. Beginning as the “Mobile Kitchen”, New Visions provided nightly meals to the homeless and hungry from a bus under the Council Bluffs viaduct. For two years, the bus would remain in the same spot every night, seven days a week, until Pastor Walla

r and his committed team built a new facility, naming it MOHM’s Place and began to provide thousands of meals annually to hungry men, women, and children. A short time later, as community need increased, MOHM’s Place expanded and began providing shelter, transitional living, increased meals, and support services for the homeless. In September 2008, New Visions built the “New Visions Complex” in Council Bluffs, the first facility in Southwest Iowa that provided a 64 bed men’s shelter plus overflow in our dining hall, 26 permanent supportive housing facility for single men and single women, a meal site that would seat 250, and an administration building for the homeless and near-homeless. In 2022 New Visions provided 36,500 nights of shelter to 769 men in our emergency shelter Joshua House, served over 150,000 meals to 2,400 hungry men, women and children in our community meal site, and provided 9,360 nights of housing to 44 chronically homeless men and women through our permanent supportive housing facility. In 2012, “New Visions Omaha” was built, providing safe housing units for veterans at no cost to the veteran and an additional 14 permanent supportive housing units for the veterans to discharge to if they are still in need of supportive services. The campus is the only facility of its kind in the Midwest. In 2022, New Visions provided 14,600 nights of transitional/permanent supportive housing to 126 veterans that would have been living in a shelter or on the streets instead of their own fully furnished apartment. In addition, New Visions operates prevention programs paying to keep community members in housing and avoiding the crisis of homelessness, street-outreach, food security programs providing access to food to over 17,000 individuals and a holiday assistance program that brings hope to 5,000 men, women, and children in our community each year. In both locations, clients are provided with individualized case management, therapy, job-training, budgeting education, and community support services. In addition, New Visions has established job-training opportunities for the clients they serve, as well as supplemental operating funding, through MOHM’s Place Thrift Warehouse and a lawn and snow removal service with established accounts throughout the community.

Our CEO, Brandy Wallar, is in Washington DC this week at the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans conference. Brandy was invited to present information to other providers on how New Visions is leveraging our partnerships to serve our veterans experiencing homelessness. She presented alongside our good friends from 50 Mile March to share about our strong collaboration to improve the lives of veterans. We’re grateful for these opportunities to share best practices and work together to END veteran homelessness!

“KC” is a life-long resident of Council Bluffs. Drugs and addiction led him to the streets and to shelter at New Visions, where he’s been working with our team for more than a year on getting clean and housed. Recently, we were thrilled to hand KC the keys to his very own apartment. KC says, “if you find yourself homeless and struggling with sobriety, there’s only one solution: get clean and stay clean!”

Now that KC has his own place, he’s continuing to work on himself and his stability. KC says, “Exercising and working out is what I do now to get my mind in right place. No one else will do it for you. You have to do what it takes, otherwise you’ll fall right back into a place you don’t want to be!”

While sobriety is an individual choice that no one can make for you, KC also acknowledges that he was blessed to have many people who helped get him to where he is today. He specifically mentions his family as well as friends and people in the community like Mike, Rochelle, Leland, Boz, Jody, and Mark. Each of these individuals helped KC with a place to stay, employment, or simply encouragement.

At New Visions, we’re proud to have been a part of KC’s story, but we know that we couldn’t do this alone. Maybe YOU have offered help to someone like KC, or maybe you are a family member or friend of someone experiencing homelessness. We want you to know that even when the help you give feels small or insignificant, it all MATTERS. Like KC, we too are grateful to individuals and organizations who walk with us to offer help, hope, and opportunity to people like KC.

*P.S. KC's beautiful photo was taken at his daughter's wedding, while he was still living in homelessness.
