COMPOST "GREENS" AND "BROWNS" You can create your own compost with a bit effort, using your garden debris, kitchen scraps, and paper wastes.

Greens are nitrogen-rich and comprise kitchen scraps, grass clippings, eggshells, and farm animal manure. W**ds are also considered "green," but you need to be careful not to add w**d seeds to your compost!

Browns are carbon-rich and consist of leaves, straw, wood chips, saw dust, dead plants, and coffee/tea.

Here's the good part. For every shovelful of greens, add two or three shovelfuls (leaves) of browns. This creates a healthy ratio that enables microorganisms and insects to break down the organic material into humus, necessary for creating nutritious soil.

Fall storms can bring power outages and travel disruptions to Camano—and SR 532 is the island’s only land connection.

Use the final days of August to:

✅ Sign up for Island County myAlerts.
✅ Save Snohomish PUD’s outage number: 425-783-1001.
✅ Stock several days of water, food, medications and pet supplies.
✅ Charge battery banks and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
✅ Make a backup plan for medical devices and electric well pumps.

A little preparation now can make the next storm much easier to manage.

📸 Register now for the Washington State 4-H Teen Conference - June 22-25, 2026 🍀

Interested in inspiring the next generation of leaders?

High-school aged teens (those who have completed 8th grade and up) are encouraged to come to the Pullman Campus of Washington State University in June each year for the Washington State 4-H Teen Conference.

Some highlights include: touring the beautiful Pullman campus of WSU, staying in college dormitories, eating at WSU’s dining center, and attending workshops and tours to highlight career pathways and opportunities. We will include workshops to help youth begin preparing for college applications, scholarship applications, choosing a college major, and choosing a career pathway. We will also have opportunities for leadership development, service projects, team-building activities, and fun!

Date: June 22-25, 2026
Location: WSU Pullman Campus
Ages: High School students who have completed 8th grade through 12th grade
Registration: open via 4-H Online
Deadline to Register: May 31st
Cost Youth $295, Volunteers - no cost, Youth Conference Facilitator - $195
