The Rhode Island Governorโ€™s Commission on Disabilities is recruiting volunteers to help identify potential accessibility barriers at polling places during the 2026 statewide elections.

Volunteer polling-place monitors will complete a brief accessibility survey during either:

Statewide Primary: September 9, 2026
Statewide General Election: November 3, 2026

Each survey takes approximately 15 minutes and may be completed at any time during Election Day using either an online or printed form. The information collected helps the Commission work with local Boards of Canvassers to address barriers and strengthen access for future voters. Volunteers must attend a GCD Polling Monitor Training.

Rhode Island is receiving national recognition as a place where people can live and age well.

A recent analysis by healthcare staffing platform Nursa ranked Rhode Island seventh among the states for growing older. The ranking considered factors including healthcare availability, workforce capacity, nursing-home care, life expectancy, healthcare costs, and environmental conditions associated with longevity.

This is encouraging recognition of many of Rhode Islandโ€™s strengthsโ€”but rankings never tell the whole story.

At the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging, we know that the experience of growing older is shaped not only by healthcare, but also by safe and affordable housing, transportation, food access, economic security, caregiver support, social connection, accessibility, and the ability to remain engaged in community life.

We welcome this recognition while remaining focused on the work ahead: building a Rhode Island where every personโ€”across every community, identity, income level, and abilityโ€”has the support and opportunity to live well as they age.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—๐—ผ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ is bringing ๐— ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—๐—ผ๐—ฒ, ๐—›๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ & ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ to Rhode Island for two ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ community engagement forums.

The project uses documentary film and personal storytelling to open a larger conversation about Alzheimerโ€™s dementia, family caregiving, brain health, and the supports people need before, during, and after a caregiving experience.

For those of us working at the intersection of creativity and well-being, this is a strong example of arts and health in practice: story as entry point, film as a structure for gathering, and community conversation as a bridge to information, resources, and support.

I am eager to join the conversation during an open panel discussion with the filmmaker and other colleagues across the fields of arts and medicine after each showing- Newport and Providence.

This article highlights an important public health and aging issue: LGBTQ+ older adults deserve access to healthcare, aging services, housing, community supports, and long-term care environments that are safe, affirming, culturally responsive, and rooted in dignity
