They may say that Medicare is sending out new cards, like a plastic card or one with a chip. The scammers might ask you to confirm your identity before they send you the new card. This could mean asking for your Medicare number. This is a way for them to steal your personal or financial information. Cashiers, you can save the holidays! Did you know that scammers trick seniors to buy gift cards for fake emergencies? You can play a huge role in stopping these scammers and protecting people.

Here’s how cashiers can help:

🚫 Pause the purchase: If a customer seems confused or upset while buying large amounts of gift cards, gently ask if someone told them to make the purchase.
💬 Start the conversation: Explain that government agencies, tech companies, and legitimate businesses never ask for payment with gift cards.
🧾 Post reminders: Display signs near gift card racks warning about scams.
📞 Encourage reporting: Suggest contacting local law enforcement if they are worried.

A simple question at the checkout could save someone from losing their savings.

Skilled nursing facility (SNF) care is post-hospital care provided at a SNF. Skilled nursing care includes services such as administration of medications, tube feedings, and wound care. Hospice care is a valuable resource for those with a terminal illness. But scammers trick people into signing up even if they don’t need it. Beware of hospice scams. Medicare.gov/fraud Beware of scammers, sometimes posing as salespeople, offering “free” services or gifts. They may be trying to trick you into signing up for hospice care without your knowledge. Hospice care is a serious decision that should only be made between you and your doctor.
