A few things going on tomorrow, September 2, 2026 to be aware of:
1. As announced earlier, the earthen part of the dam will be closed for mowing. Access across the river will still be possible by using the Toe Rd and Ramp Rd.
2. The Powerhouse will be conducting black start testing of generators. This means the spillway gates will be open at times. When spillway gates are open, boats will need to be downstream of the big red signs.

A memorial bench was recently dedicated in honor of Bruce Dvoracek, who served at the Gavins Point Dam powerhouse for more than two decades before his passing in 2022.

Bruce’s dedication to his work, his mechanical expertise and the relationships he built with his colleagues left a lasting impact on the Gavins Point team.

“Bruce was highly dedicated to his craft and ensuring the safety of all personnel in the powerplant,” said Martin Goding, Gavins Point Dam powerplant superintendent. "Bruce had a work ethic that knew no ends. He was a highly skilled technician and showed his dedication every time he stepped into the powerplant.”

Read the full story to learn more about Bruce’s career, the memories shared by those who knew him and the new memorial bench that will serve as a place to reflect and remember.

Here is what a cleaned intake gate looks like. They weigh 88,000 lbs when clean. The 3 our crews cleaned the last few weeks weighed an average of 113,000 lbs. So each gate had an average of 25,000 lbs of zebra mussels and debris removed from them.

The road closure the last 2 weeks have been for intake gate cleaning. As you can see, these gates are heavily fouled with zebra mussels. If not maintained, we might not be able to move them as they might become too heavy for the crane to lift. Powerhouse staff has been working hard to get them clean and back in service. We might not need all the planned closure dates we originally planned on, but we will make adjustments to that at a later date.
