Take advantage of free drop off for tree trimmings as part of the City of Yankton’s annual effort to improve visibility and safety on city thoroughfares. Tree limbs hanging over city streets and alleys must be trimmed to twelve foot (12’) and ten foot (10’) over sidewalks. Property owners are responsible for trimming trees on their property or any trees growing in the boulevard next to their property. Tree limbs and trimmings can be dropped off at the Transfer Station at 1200 West 23rd Street free of charge at any time throughout the year. Use the main entrance 8:00a.m.-3:45p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday 8:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m., and any other time at the after-hours disposal area just east of the main entrance on 23rd Street.

Tree trimming not only improves visibility for all drivers, but also helps keep the roads clear for emergency and other vehicles. Clear roadways mean that school buses can run routes on time, and snow plows can efficiently clear streets once the snow starts falling.

Chip Sealing September 2026

The City of Yankton Street Department will continue the street seal coat program on Thursday, September 10th, 2026 and should be completed in approximately one day, weather permitting. Streets scheduled for sealing include the following:

Valley Road: From 21st Street to Peninah Street
Jason Way: From Valley Road to Peninah Street

The process will be to oil the road and cover it with 3/8" rock chips. The streets will be closed to traffic during the seal coat process and opened to traffic immediately after the application. After 1 week, the street sweeper will pick up the excess chips that are still loose.

“No Parking” signs will be placed on the streets the day before they are sealed. Please observe these signs and do not park on the streets until the work is done. Please do not blow grass onto the street before the streets are sealed or permit underground irrigation systems to run water onto the streets while the No Parking signs are up. In the event of rain, the process may be postponed. Thank you for your cooperation during this process.

RE: Auld-Brokaw Trail area for closure south of 15th Street to Morgen Park

RELEASE DATE: September 2, 2026 – October 15, 2026

The Department of Parks and Recreation would like to inform the community that the Auld-Brokaw Trail, south of 15th Street to Morgen Park, will be closed due to construction. Citizens should not enter the construction zone areas and please respect all fences and barriers as areas that should not be entered.

The detour for the trail to allow people to travel around the construction area would be the sidewalks on West 11th Street and Green Street.

The City of Yankton thanks all citizens and trail users for their cooperation.

Public Service Announcement

RE: City of Yankton 250th Celebration-
Planting of the liberty tree.

The Yankton Parks, Recreation, and City Events Department invites the public to attend the planting of a “liberty tree” as a part of Yankton, SD Celebrates America’s 250 on Thursday, September 17, 8:30am to 9:00am, in Fantle Memorial Park. The tree planting will take place east of the large flag pole in the middle of the park. Please park in The Huether Family Aquatics Center parking lot to access the area.

Come to the planting celebration and hear a proclamation from Yankton’s Mayor. See the Valley Forge Elm be planted. See the plaque that will be installed at the base of the tree. Hear a Yankton Middle School student speak about America’s liberty trees and why September 17 is an important date in America’s history. You will also hear about the tree itself and the characteristics of a Valley Forge Elm.
